Why do Freemasons have ceremonies?
And what are they all about?
Think of someone whose advice has stayed with you. Maybe it was a grandparent who helped you see things in perspective, a colleague who took the time to guide you, or someone whose example showed you the value of keeping your word. Years later, you may find yourself passing on something they taught you. Their influence lives on in the choices you make, the way you treat others, and the encouragement you offer.
Freemasonry draws on this connection between what we learn and what we pass on. We look to the lessons and wisdom of those who came before us to guide and inspire the people who will shape the future. And that includes all of us! Everyone alive today will influence the future in some way, big or small.
Our ceremonies are a bit like interactive lectures or plays, focused on teaching moral and ethical lessons. They explore character, responsibility, and how we treat one another. Through stories and symbols, they pass on the importance of certain values from one generation to the next.
Integrity. Friendship. Respect. Service.
By putting these principles into practice, we can set an example for others to carry forward.
Those who came before us can’t shape our future; that responsibility rests with us. But the wisdom found in the traditions they passed on can help us build our future wisely. We can learn from their achievements and mistakes, then bring their insights together with our own understanding and perspectives to meet the challenges of our time.
In our Lodges, this sharing of knowledge continues not only through ceremonies but also through friendships among people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. We learn from one another, support each other and pool our efforts to support good causes within our communities.
Over time, what we learn from this experience becomes part of who we are, and what we leave behind: someone we encouraged, a friendship we nurtured, or help we offered when it mattered most. These may not seem like big things, but they can make a huge difference to other people. If you recognise something of yourself in this, you may already have more in common with Freemasons than you think.
