*****๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™‚๏ธ Training nights - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:30, at Gordon Promenade ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ*****

The weeks are flying by and before we know it, the Regatta will be here! Shoreside organisation is going well and we want our river section to be equally as entertaining!

To do this - WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need more rowers to join our existing members, to ensure we can present a full weekendโ€™s racing programme.

Whether youโ€™ve rowed before, havenโ€™t picked up an oar in years, or are completely new, EVERYONE is welcome - we just ask that you are aged 18+.

You can come along as an individual or perhaps you already take part in a sport, gym or pub games team and fancy trying something different. Have a chat with your friends and come along together, we have volunteers who will be able to show you the ropes.

Our boats are stable, the atmosphere is social, and itโ€™s something you can pick up quicker than you might think, quicker than your arms realise what youโ€™ve signed up for.

๐Ÿšฃ Support the Future of Gravesend Town Regatta ๐Ÿšฃ

For 180 years, the Gravesend Town Regatta has been part of our town's river heritage, bringing together rowers, volunteers, families and the wider community.

As we prepare for our 180th anniversary celebrations on 1st & 2nd August, we're working hard to make this year's event bigger, more inclusive and more enjoyable than ever before. Alongside the traditional rowing, we're expanding the shoreside activities with community groups, entertainment, family attractions and opportunities to celebrate our shared maritime heritage.

As a volunteer-run charity, none of this happens without support.

We've therefore launched a dedicated donation page for anyone who would like to contribute towards the future of the Regatta. Every donation, no matter how small, will help us continue preserving this important local tradition and developing the event for future generations.

If you've enjoyed the Regatta in the past, believe in preserving local heritage, or simply want to support a positive community event in Gravesend, we'd be incredibly grateful for your support.

Please also help us by sharing this post with friends, family and local businesses.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to welcoming you to the 180th Gravesend Town Regatta this August.

โ€ฆa lovely photo of the newest member of the โ€˜Boat Buoysโ€™ - Geoff, at his purpose made bench ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Geoff 82, who has recently lost his wife, was becoming a little isolated and came across Gravesend Regatta Society, when one of his care workers found the Menโ€™s Sheds Association website.

Menโ€™s Sheds is an amazing charity, which promotes connection, conversation and creation. It encourages people to come together to make, repair and repurpose, supporting projects in their local communities.

Being part of a โ€˜shedโ€™ like this, can go a long way to improving wellbeing, reducing loneliness and combatting social isolation.

We are lucky enough to have our very own shedโ€ฆnamed โ€˜Boat Buoysโ€™, which meets on Tuesday/Thursday and Saturday mornings, come rain or shine. It is our boat yard for the Regatta boats, plus a lockup where we can carry out our jobs undercover, if need be.

Typical tasks involve general maintenance of the rowing equipment, including the skiffs and motorboat, plus a spot of gardening and even small repairs to the lockup. Itโ€™s not all work though, as thereโ€™s always an opportunity to have a chat over a cup of tea/coffee too ๐Ÿ˜Š.

If you are interested in helping out, either regularly or now and then, please contact Ian, on 07582 876069, for more details of times/days.

Full details on Menโ€™s Sheds can also be found here

In 2023 Tom and Iris, from TJโ€™s Pub, sponsored a shield for this race, to be held annually, in memory of ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐–๐ž๐›๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ, who had passed away earlier that year.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง was quite a character and coxed many races over the years, including those for both the Town and Shrimperโ€™s Regattas, the Great River Race and Gravesend Rowing Club fine boats.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง was well known in Gravesend and, before moving up to The Wirral, could be found holding court in TJโ€™s pub. As well as being involved in rowing, he was also a keen golf player and a hockey umpire. Everyone in these circles knew ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง for his quick wit, sense of humour and story telling.

The race will be over a course of approximately 6 miles starting at the New Bridge jetty, turning at New Parsonโ€™s Light and finishing just outside the Rowing Club. Crews may have a rowing cox.

All participants must be available to muster outside the Rowing Club by 11.15am, for a prompt start at 11.45am. The race itself shouldnโ€™t take longer than 1ยผ hrs, depending on the weather/conditions.

Please register your intention to row, on the WhatsApp rowers group. This will help with organisation, helpers cover and coxes.

โ€ฆtwo birds, one stone!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

Yesterday, despite the rather stiff breeze, two crews โ€˜enjoyedโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜‰ a rather fresh row down river. The return row, to the New Bridge jetty, was certainly harder as the strong gusts ๐Ÿ’จ ๐Ÿ’จ presented a condition known as โ€˜wind over tideโ€™.

However, once everyone was back on dry land, the rowers/coxes were joined by Ian and Terry, who form part of the regular boathouse volunteers.

Together, we managed to get 2 skiffs ashore and stored in the yard, behind the Promenade Cafe, ready for winter maintenance.

BIG THANKS to all who came along to row, cox and help afterwards with the boats. A further date will be announced soon to get the final skiff ashore ๐Ÿ˜Š.

If you are interested in joining our boatyard volunteers, to help out over the winter, please call Ian Stevenson, on 07582 876069, for details of days/timesโ€ฆ
