Catterall in Bloom

Catterall in Bloom We are looking out for wildlife in Catterall by planting new flower beds.

The theme for Catterall in Bloom this year is ‘Turning Grey to Green’ which involves adding a splash of colour to your garden. The Royal Horticultural Society judges will be visiting the area on Friday 24th July and we have several displays around Stone Cross Gardens, Duckworth Drive and Catterall Village Hall for them to enjoy. New floral planters made from recycled materials have been placed in

strategic locations to catch the judges’ eye and larger floral beds established at Stone Cross Gardens and Catterall Village Hall. If you would like to help and meet other members of the local community, just turn up at Stone Cross Gardens on Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm.

Our secret garden project down Stone Cross Lane is now taking shape. We have cut out new flower beds and started to plant them up. Four fruit trees and two fruit bushes have been put in, Lots of snowdrop and wild daffodil bulbs have been planted and wildflower seeds have been sown. We will be adding more plants in the next few weeks. The existing beds have also been replanted where necessary.

Our long term aim is to make this area a haven for wildlife and so we still have a lot of work to do.

If you want to join us, new members are always very welcome. You do not need any gardening experience, just bring a trowel. We meet on Tuesdays at 9.30 am until 11.00 am at the Village Hall and starting from Monday, 13th April at 6.30 pm until 8.00 pm at Stone Cross Gardens. Come along and join us as few or as many times as you like.

The secret garden is on the left as you walk down Stone Cross Gardens. Have a walk down there next time you are out and about. It will soon start to grow and bloom as the weather warms up.

A big thank you to CPS (Central Power Services) who sent two helpers to join us this morning at Stone Cross Gardens. They helped us to achieve a lot of work on a beautiful spring day and also have donated some tools. We hope they enjoyed their morning as much as we did.

If you visited the park today, you might have noticed a soil mountain! Our volunteers are working VERY hard trying to move the soil to where we need it. The soil is very sustainable as it is the processed result from all the green waste collected by the council. The Peace Garden that is currently being renovated, thanks to a Lancashire Council Council grant, has taken quite a large chunk of it and the rest is needed in other areas of Catterall. We even had steam coming out our spades this morning!!!

We have more exciting news!!!! We have been given funds by Lancashire County Council to develop the Peace Garden in the park. This garden bed (seen in the photo below) is by the car park, next to the remembrance gates and a remembrance bench. It has recently been cleared of some overgrown laurel bushes, but 3 trees that are currently in the bed will remain. The plans are to underplant with shade loving plants. They will be mostly white flowering for peace, but will be dotted with red to represent hope and support for armed forces and purple for animals that served.

Work will start very soon on this improvement, so please stop and say hello if you are passing. If you would like the opportunity to join in, you would be most welcome. You do not need any gardening experience, just bring a trowel and a smile! We meet on Tuesdays from 9.30 am to 11.00 am at the Village Hall from March to October and in the summer months only on Mondays 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm at Stone Cross Gardens. However, you will see us out and about at other times, as we have a lot of work to do and we do actually enjoy ourselves!!

A big THANK YOU to Lancashire County Council.

Welcome to a new gardening year from fellow gardeners at Catterall in Bloom! We have had another successful year, as we gained our 7th Gold award in the Northwest regional competition. We also received the prestigious Glasdon award for sustainable gardening. This has been due to the real dedication, vision and hard work of a small number of “Bloomers”, who have also been invited to represent the North West in the RHS national competition in 2026.

We also have exciting news!!!! We have been awarded a grant from the National Lottery to develop a piece of land down Stone Cross Gardens. The mediterranean garden down Stone Cross Gardens was praised very highly by the judges last year. They said it “would not look out of place at Tatton Park”, so we are very excited that we can now develop this nearby land for the enjoyment of all the community.

This is a photo of some of our volunteers planting fruit trees on the land to be developed. If you would like the opportunity to join our friendly band, whilst getting some fresh air and exercise, you would be most welcome. You do not need any gardening experience, just bring a trowel and a smile! We meet on Tuesdays from 9.30 am to 11.00 am at the Village Hall from March to October and in the summer months only on Mondays 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm at Stone Cross Gardens.

If you see us out and about in our hi-vis yellow jackets, please say hello.

Exciting news for Catterall!! Our village has been chosen to represent the whole of the North West for the National Britain in Bloom Awards in 2026! All the volunteers will be working harder than ever next year to bring the village up to the highest standard possible. After winning the award for the most sustainable large village in the North West this year, we will be continuing our work in this area as well and hope this gives us an edge. New volunteers are always made very welcome and we hope that we can have as much help and support from local residents as possible.

We are very happy to say that Catterall in Bloom have achieved a GOLD for 2025. We were presented with the certificate today at the North West in Bloom Awards in Bolton. We also were presented with a glass bowl for the 2025 Award for Sustainable Gardening. We have sustainability and the environment in our minds whenever we are planning and working and so we are very pleased to have received this special recognition of our efforts.

What a beauty - the first of many new bulbs. Catterall in Bloom have planted about 2500 bulbs this autumn. Amazing!!! A lot were planted last Saturday in the park at our Community Event. They will all bloom in the spring - we can't wait to see them all!! However, some autumn crocuses were also planted near the wildflower meadows down Duckworth Drive and this is one of the first to flower. Thanks to everyone who supported our event on Saturday. CiB will be slowing down now until next year, but you will still see us out and about. Please say hello if you see us and new members are always welcome.
