💬 What is Echolalia?

Have you ever heard a child repeat words, phrases, or lines from TV shows and wondered why?

Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases that a person has heard before. It is commonly seen in autistic individuals and is often a valuable form of communication rather than something that needs to be stopped.

🗣️ Echolalia can help a child:
✨ Communicate wants and needs
✨ Process information
✨ Learn language skills
✨ Regulate emotions and anxiety
✨ Participate in conversations

Sometimes the repeated words may seem unrelated to the situation, but they can carry important meaning for the individual using them.

Instead of asking “How do we stop it?”, a better question is often “What is this child trying to communicate?”

By understanding echolalia, we can better support communication, reduce frustration, and build stronger connections with neurodivergent children.

🩵 Every communication attempt has value.

📣 Our diary is now OPEN for Sensory Profile bookings!

Sensory profiles can be incredibly valuable in helping adults better understand a child or young person’s sensory needs, differences, triggers, and regulation patterns. They can support:
✨ Home routines and daily life
✨ Emotional regulation and wellbeing
✨ School understanding of needs and support strategies
✨ Reducing overwhelm, stress, and sensory overload
✨ Creating more suitable environments and expectations

A sensory profile can help build a clearer picture of why certain behaviours, responses, or challenges may be happening — allowing support to become more understanding, proactive, and effective both at home and within educational settings.

Chloe & Cheryl are qualified Sensory Integration Facilitators, bringing both professional knowledge and practical experience when supporting families and settings. 🩵
