The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has over 210,000 members in around 6,600 WIs. The WI pla
ys a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

A new WI was formed in Poynton in 2013, we are all still very excited and enthusiastic about it! We only do what the group want to do and we try to accommodate everyone in planning the programme for the year ahead, but we also hope you try everything on offer as you never know - you may love something you have never considered before! We are a group for ALL ladies, you will be made to feel very welcome, so even if you don't know anyone please come along a join us for a meeting! We meet the last Thursday of every month (taking December off for family time) at The Club (working men’s club) park lane 8pm (arrive early to beat those bar queues!)
There is a yearly membership fee to join (please message us for the latest information). But, don't worry, if you are not sure, you don't have to sign up straight away. You can attend a couple of meetings as a visitor- we do ask for a small visitors fee to cover costs- but this will give you a couple of months to attend the main meetings to see if Poynton WI is for you! At the monthly meeting we have speakers, demo's, a quiz night or trips, all relating to suggestions made by members, so this will be quite varied. There are also opportunities to go on trips and attend events along with the wider WI community across Cheshire and beyond. Once you become a member of Poynton WI you can attend any or all of our many and varied sub-group meetings that occur during the month. From the Jam Tarts cookery group, walking groups, book groups, a board game group and more, through to the Crafty Ladies craft group and the 'Everyone welcome' Craft and Chat mornings where you can come for a chat, a bit of crafting, or best of all... both! All in all, we always look forward to meeting new friends, learning new things and being a WI to be proud of!
