The Petroleum Philatelic Society International - PPSI

The Petroleum Philatelic Society International - PPSI PETROLEUM PHILATELIC SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL is the society for collectors of stamps, covers etc. related to oil, natural gas & the petrochemical industry

The PETROLEUM PHILATELIC SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL (PPSI) is the society for collectors of stamps, covers and related items on the subject of oil, natural gas, and the petrochemical industry. The PPSI is a study unit of the American Topical Association and is Affiliate 170 of the American Philatelic Society. The society has members throughout the world. Many of our members are, or have been, involved

in the oil or gas industries but this is by no means a requirement, and we welcome new members from all walks of life. We publish a quarterly journal, The Petro-Philatelist. In addition catalogues of world petroleum stamps and petroleum related revenue stamps are produced although all these documents are available only to members of the society. Maintaining the catalogue of petroleum stamps is a significant undertaking in view of the number of new stamp issues, particularly as these need to be audited, to ensure that they are genuinely petroleum related. Updates to the catalogue are issued regularly as part of each edition of The Petro-Philatelist.

A single stamp souvenir sheet was issued by Oman on December 8th 2025 to commemorate 100 years of Energy, a legacy and an impact. The actual event commemorated is 100 years since their first exploration concession agreement in 1925, followed by the major transformations that lead to an integrated oil and gas infrastructure. The selvage of the sheet shows an early percussion type drilling tool. The stamp value on this sheet is 1 Rial. At the same time a miniature sheet was issued wth 6 stamps each of 500 Baisa, with a design very similar to the 1 Rial stamp, but without any illustration. These sheets will be of interest to petro-philatelists!

A stamp issued by Poland on November 17 2025, in their series dedicated to the 1st Armoured Division, commemorates the capture of Wilhelmshaven in 1945. The stamp features a photograph of a Sherman tank from the 1st Armored Division, positioned next to destroyed gas tanks in the port of Wilhelmshaven in 1945. Interestingly the arrangement of stamps in the sheet of 12 is such that every stamp is tête-bêche in relation to its neighbours. The destroyed gasometers mean that this stamp is of interest to petro-stamp collectors!

A new issue from Russia, released on August 26, commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Kogalym, in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra. The foundation of the town is related to the discovery of the Povkhovskoye, Vatyoganskoye and Tevlinsko-Russkinskoye oil fields in Western Siberia in 1971. The postage stamp provides an image of sculptural composition A Drop of Life by A. Kovalchuk, against the background of the Church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana and a modern residential complex. The drop of life has inside it, images of drill rigs, a pump jack and an oil refinery.

Azerbaijan issued this souvenir sheet on June 24 to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Azerbaijan Banks Association. This is not something we'd normally be interested in, but if you look at the building in the background, you'll find it is Zeynalabfin Taghiyev's palace, a picture taken in 1950 - and on Wikipedia. Taghiyev was a national industrial magnate in Azerbaijan, who made a fortune in the oil industry, and was the subject of a stamp himself in 2023, PSW #145
