The Apple Cause team are thinking ahead to our launch on 21st October and we'd love to prepare some little recipe cards to have on our information table.
We'd really like to get some lovely family recipes that have been passed down to our supporters through the generations, or something unique that you've developed yourself.

We couldn't agree more, we're trying to take a little step in that direction.

✍️ The UK’s biggest supermarkets recently sent an open letter to Prime minister Andy Burnham calling for the urgent introduction of a ‘Good Food Bill’.

“Food,” the letter says, “has to stop being an afterthought”. It’d be hard to disagree. But what to do about it?

🌍 Ongoing geopolitical instability and extreme weather are currently making it abundantly clear that we can no longer rely on a food a system that depends upon an uncertain supply of fossil fuel-intensive inputs – supplies of which are increasingly impacted by geopolitical instability – and that simultaneously degrades the soil upon which our daily bread quite literally depends.

👉 The solution? We need a nationwide shift to farming systems that are less dependent upon imported inputs, and that support healthy, more resilient soils; soil that holds water and acts as a natural defence against drought, that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere and helps fight climate change, and which creates more nutrient dense food for us all to enjoy.

It is possible – we just need to bite the bullet and make some brave decisions on how farming in the UK urgently needs to adapt.

This week has been a bit up and down for the Apple Cause team, but we've definitely learned some lessons. If you believe in something, take no notice of negative opinions and give it a go.
That's exactly what we're doing!

I also think I should clarify a few things about what Apple Cause is and how it will work.

We are looking to develop a digital map that will show the location of growers and gardeners who have any excess fruit and veg to anyone in need of these items.
Growers will be required to put whatever they have to offer in an accessible spot, but that's all. Nothing more than that. Noone will be knocking on your door and no face to face interaction is required.

Why are we trying to get this off the ground? The reasons are many and varied.
1. Fruit and veg will be used rather than going to waste, and people who need it will be able to benefit, addresses food inequalities.
2. If more people have access to free fruit and veg, this will have an impact on the overall health of our residents.
3. The project is a step towards becoming a more climate resilient town, a little less reliant on large supermarkets.
4. Growers will feel part of a community and will enjoy the social impact of being part of something and contributing to the neighbourhood.
5. The project lends intself well to educational opportunities involving planting, growing, harvesting and a 'grow to give' scheme.
