Another set of Baldwin pictures. This is the front cylinder cover of the drivers side cylinder, for those of you that remember the cylinder with the scored bore.
During the refitting of the cover prior to this years steam test the cover revealed a crack. On further investigation it was found that body filler had been used to repair miss drilled holes in this replacement cover.
A replacement cover is currently being manufactured along with a repair stud.

The Baldwin’s motion on return from the blasting company.
The concerns of the team were justified. Stripping the paint, body filler and rust from the motion has revealed some questionable welding repairs on almost all of the motion parts.
As a result the decision has been made to replace the major load bearing components, as a minimum before the locomotive will be ticketed to leave our own railway.

As part of the on going work restoring the Baldwin the rods where removed to have them soda blasted to allow a full inspection. Earlier the team had carried out some investigatory magnetic particle inspection. This inspection had raised concerns that the motion was not going to be sufficiently strong for operations on the WHR, especially given our experience with Russell.

The team have been busy working on the Buffet Coach to improve the brake pull rods. This has included how they are routed to prevent vibration noise from their interaction with other parts of the bogies and carriage frame. To remove lost motion to improve brake pressure by using rectangular section rather than bent rod, the latter tends to want to straighten under tension. Finally to increase the points of capture to retain the rods should an end become free.

A new crosshead pin assembly for Hunslet 901 “Russell” of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. The final part to be made as part of the new connecting rod for the locomotive.
