Last night was the first Storm Petrel ringing session on the Alderney coast for 2026. The first Petrel encountered was already ringed, a UK control. The second Petrel was also wearing a ring, this individual was originally ringed on Burhou as an adult in July 2003. The last time it was encountered was July 2015.

The main migration period is coming to an end and some of the ringing sites have now been closed down for the summer in preparation for the seabird season to begin.
Migration has not completely finished for the spring though, yesterday three Spotted Flycatcher were in Barackmaster Lane and six Sedge Warbler were at Longis pond.
This morning two Wheatear were on the Defense Wall at the north end of Longis Baye, one pictured below by Matt Scragg.
Last week a White-tailed Eagle was observed flying over from Essex to Houmet Herbe. Via the AWT I have received written rarity reports from the locals and a group of visiting birders that saw the bird, I understand that there was another birder that managed to get a few pictures. Could you please get in touch on [email protected] as I would like to submit the pictures with the rarity reports forms to support the sighting with the Bailiwick rare birds committee. Thank you to the people that have already completed the forms.

Eight Reed Warblers that were previously ringed at Longis have been encountered again this week, two of which were originally ringed soon after they had fledged in 2021.
A Sedge Warbler ringed on 1st May at Longis was re-encountered the following day in Northamptonshire, over 300 kilometres away!
A Water Pipit, ringed on Wednesday, was only the second to be ringed on Alderney.

There was an arrival of Reed and Sedge Warbler on Monday morning, providing an interesting walk around the census area after a busy ringing session.
This morning was much quieter with wind from the northeast, or so I thought.......
Singles of both Western and Eastern Subalpine Warbler were ringed in 2016 and these were the first recorded on Alderney. Today's individual is the second record this year and now the second ringing record of Western Subalpine Warbler on Alderney.

After a foggy start to the day it was a glorious Sunday afternoon for the spring walk. In Longis Baye we saw Little Egret, Shelduck, Oystercatcher and Whimbrel. On Longis reserve Blackcap and Whitethroat were singing, Meadow Pipit were singing in flight display and a male Stonechat perched in a prominent position on a bramble patch. On Longis pond a family of Coot were busy feeding.
The walk concluded with tea and coffee with a fine selection of cakes, a big thank you to the bakers!
