I had an incredible response to last weeks solo episode on anger - so Iā€™ve managed to find someone whoā€™s written A WHOLE BOOK on it and the episode is out tomorrow. Itā€™s vital listening šŸ’«šŸ’«

We need to normalise and understand anger in motherhood.

When we understand WHY we lose it, we can firstly have compassion for ourselves and secondly get to know our unique warning signs to take a moment.

Like reversing a car - we have to know what our green, amber and red warning signs are - so we can push the break (and take a break.)

Anger is misunderstood in motherhood.

Itā€™s rarely just ONE thing. Itā€™s ALL the things.

We have a window of tolerance and by bedtime - weā€™ve regulated ourselves all day and we simply canā€™t anymore - so we lose it. Especially as weā€™ve talking about on stories- many of us donā€™t even get an evening to ourselves.

I created Motherkind because I felt like no one was talking about this.

Once I became a mother many of the ways I navigated life: working hard, trying to control everything, trying to be perfect and ā€˜successfulā€™ .....stopped working.

Because children canā€™t be controlled, and it doesnā€™t work to try and do motherhood perfectly (impossible) and ā€˜successā€™ took on a totally different meaning - at work and home.

ā€œYou can do it, I believe in youā€ she said to HERSELF. I couldnā€™t hold back the tears.

For most my life I had a harsh, unkind relationship with myself. My inner dialogue was like living with an inner bully. Always focusing on what I was doing wrong, why I was failing, how I couldnā€™t do it.

When I learned how we speak to ourselves is generational I decided it had to STOP.

Iā€™ve worked so hard at completely changing my inner dialogue- thanks to many of my incredible guests over the years .holistic.psychologist it has now completely changed.

My inner voice is now kind, supportive and compassionate. Itā€™s changed my life.

And it might just have changed my childrenā€™s lives too. ā¤ļø

Iā€™ve been getting a bit lost with social media recently.

Itā€™s changed so much since I started on here. Itā€™s all 4 second reels and trending audios and fun as that is sometimes, I miss the days when it used to be just you and me chatting about our motherhoods. Remember those days? When it was in the moment, spontaneous thoughts and imperfect photos.

So hereā€™s a pic of me right NOW in my messy, amazing acoustic wardrobe recording a podcast, trying to get it finished before the girls come home from school. Because even through this platform is unrecognisable from my early days - my mission is exactly the same to help us feel more empowered and confident in motherhood.

Hereā€™s what I know: The more discomfort we feel with our own emotions, the harder we find it to sit with someone elseā€™s. Thatā€™s why so many people unconsciously try to shut down someoneā€™s feelings with advice, platitudes, or toxic positivity.

Itā€™s hard to see someone you care about struggling, we so want to offer advice or ideas, but what worked for us, might not work for someone else.

The greatest gift you can offer someone who is struggling is your presence and practical support (food, childcare, washing, cleaning).

Whatā€™s the best support youā€™ve ever been given?

When said to me back in 2019 ā€œthe most important thing a parent can do is take care of themselvesā€. I knew I had to change. I was putting myself at the bottom of my priorities in life, and it wasnā€™t working. I was exhausted, and struggled to manage my 4 year oldā€™s emotions. Of course I did, I had no emotional bandwidth.

It was only when I started looking after myself TOO that everything changed.

It is never selfish to take care of yourself too, itā€™s vital ā¤ļø
