At our November meeting, we were pleased to welcome Maria Hocking from the West Cornwall Search and Rescue Team, accompanied by her team leader, Chris. Maria gave a really good overview of the work and people of the charity, and it was clear that all volunteers gave selflessly of their time and effort, having to undertake continual training as well as being on-call 24/7, 365 days a year, plus doing fund-raising and other PR work. The work involves supporting police, fire and ambulance services, but also being sent on their own (often with search dog, Merryn) to locate missing people in the various isolated and rough terrain found in West Cornwall, plus underground mine rescue work. It was fascinating to see what these wonderful people do, solely for a desire to make a difference in this world. As well as the WI cheque, members gave individual donations and were moved to give generously! We were delighted to hear that the team has just been awarded the King's Award for Voluntary Service - congratulations to you all.
