🌳 The Community Tree Nursery volunteers were busy sowing seeds last week! 🌳

✨ They managed to sow out germinating seeds into trays which is the first important step in growing young trees.

The species sown include:

- Blackthorn
- Crab apple
- Judas tree
- Elder
- Silver birch
- & more!

The volunteers then got to work building the new raised-planters (repurposed cattle troughs) in the new nursery area.

They finished the day by conducting a couple of pH tests on the soil samples from the new area, determining whether the soil is in a suitable condition for growing trees. So far the results are looking good 🌱✨

πŸͺ» Last week the Community Tree Nursery volunteers planted over 300 wildflower bulbs and plug plants for biodiversity and soil health around the new nursery area! 🐝

🐞 This work marks an important stage in the design of the new growing area where the volunteers have started to bolster existing plant populations and introduce new woodland and hedgerow plant species to provide habitats for pollinators, beneficial insects, and animals.

🌼 Some of the species planted include: Greater Stitchwort, English Bluebell, Wood Avens, Wild Primrose, Wild Daffodil, Red Campion, and many more.

❓️ Did you know that increasing plant biodiversity can help to control 'pest' populations in a natural and sustainable way?

Installing these plants will also help mitigate the impact of work that has happened to make the new nursery space. Over time this are will flourish into a haven for wildlife and young trees.

🌱 We are looking forward to seeing the space grow🌳

🌳 What have the Community Tree Nursery volunteers been up over the last month?

βœ”οΈ The volunteers have been working hard to get the grant-funded nursery expansion ready for action, focusing on the soft landscaping and working on the soil (arguable the most important part!) this has included:

πŸ’ͺ Creating a tiered bed system to help capture water and organise the space into compartments. Each bed is designed with space for field-grown trees and a woodchip path for access. A timber sleeper holds each tier, creating long 'steps' to tackle topography of the site.

πŸ› οΈ Building and installing a new round worktable - this task was a quick but fun one and the table has already become integral part of volunteer work and wellbeing. Being able to sit in the space and reflect on the work done has been very rewarding.

πŸ§ͺ Collecting samples to test soil pH - this is another crucial step in setting up a new growing space. By understanding the soil conditions present, it will help us make better use of the space and make any amendments if necessary.

🌟 Thank you to the CTN volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout this process, whom without none of this work would have been possible.

We are delighted to have been able to install 2 new benches in the Pasley Street Pocket Park last week.

Big thanks to Rupert for installing them for us and Chris, one of our volunteer Tree Wardens, for giving him a hand.

Aaron was on hand to test the first one out.

Next job is the interpretation boards!

This project has been made possible by the efforts of loads of volunteers, including the Stoke In Bloom team and these smashing new benches were funded by the Plymouth & South Devon Community Forest.
