The Yealm Gig rowing Club was founded in 1991 and was the first gig club to form outside of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The club’s first gig was bought from Newquay Rowing Club. She was originally known as ‘Unity’ and was renamed ‘Hornet’ by the Yealm (the Hornet is now owned by Port Isaac Gig Club and goes by the name of ‘Unity’ once again). The Club currently owns three gigs: ‘Wasp’, built
by Dave Currah of Looe in 1994, ‘Joker’, also built by Dave Currah in 1997 and ‘Hornet’, our newly launched plastic gig. The club draws most of its membership from the villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, situated either side of the creek of the river Yealm. We are principally a social rowing club, with a very active veteran, super veteran and super super veteran membership, enjoying a regular rowing programme, with occasional focussed training sessions for specific events. In the summer holidays we organise junior rowing in the river, weather permitting. We are lucky enough to have the option of rowing out to sea when the weather is fine but, on rough days we can switch to rowing up the River Yealm, where it is more sheltered. The times for rowing practices vary from day to day because our ability to row is tide-dependent. Our focal point is a wooden shed on Noss Hard where more information can be found.
