45 years ago, Raiders of the Lost Ark burst onto cinema screens and redefined the possibilities of visual storytelling.

Shot by legendary Douglas Slocombe BSC the film remains a masterclass in cinematic craftsmanship. From the sun-drenched deserts of Egypt to the shadowy interiors of ancient temples, Slocombe’s cinematography combines scale, atmosphere and precision to create images that have become part of cinema’s collective memory.

Working in close collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Slocombe crafted a visual language that balanced adventure, suspense and spectacle with remarkable elegance. The dynamic camera movement, expressive lighting and meticulous composition continue to inspire cinematographers around the world.

Other BSC members joining him on this adventure include Paul Beeson BSC (Additional Photography), Robin Vidgeon BSC (Assistant Camera) and David Worley Assoc BSC (Operator, 2nd Unit).

Dougie shot Raiders on 35mm using the Panavision Panaflex-X and ARRIFLEX 35 IIC cameras with Panavision C-Series lenses.

On the 45th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark, we celebrate Douglas Slocombe’s extraordinary contribution to the art of cinematography and the enduring power of images that transport audiences into worlds of wonder and adventure.
