Chair’s Summary
This will be a short and emotional report to announce the closure of dare2express as a charity.
The initial campaign I undertook to get people talking about mental health all the way back in late 2013, was only meant to be exactly that, a campaign to get people talking. Quickly, it gathered momentum, unintendedly, in mid-2015 the arduous task to open a charity was made, by myself, Louise Salter and Nathan Giles.
Primarily, the principle of the charity was nothing more than open talks and very openly documenting my journey, then eventually we decided to offer grants to support people through their recovery for professional help. This quickly grew its own persona, and the task of fundraising began, which was an entirely new thing for all of us, and at times difficult.
Overall, dare2express has been a resounding success, and we have delivered countless grants and distributing more than £50,000 of grants over the years in support of people’s recovery and events promoting mental ill-health.
This far exceeded the original concept of just talking about mental health, we made a difference, and in the process likely to have saved lives.
Sadly, with the departure of 2 of our trustees, and people not having the spare time capacity to join the charity, combined with my personal grief and fatigue after more than a decade of service, we have decided to close dare2express as a charity.
While there is great sadness, we are not able to continue our financial support to people, we will never forget the often-emotional journey you as beneficiaries have given us, some good, some upsetting, often feeling privileged to have been trusted with people secrets on this difficult road to recovery. We are proud to have supported you, seen your growth and often seeing you get on a positive path in life.
There is a balance of funds remaining in our account, which will be distributed to other registered, and vetted charities here in the UK who are aligned with the principles of dare2express and why it was formed.
They are, Off the Record, Samaritans, The Origin Project, Wi******er Youth Counselling and Strongmen.
We will be closing this page 48 hours after this post.
Sincerely,
John Dennis - Founder and Trustee
