Not every child needs more support.

Sometimes they need the right support.

Across our Alternative Provision, PE and wraparound settings, one thing we see repeatedly is that children often engage differently when expectations are clear, relationships are consistent and movement is part of the environment.

The challenge isn't always motivation.

Sometimes it's creating an environment where children feel able to succeed.

After-school clubs back in full swing again this week 👇

From team games and challenges to movement-based activities, it's been great seeing children reconnect with friends, build confidence and get active again after half-term.

Sometimes the biggest win isn't the activity itself.

It's seeing children walk into a session smiling and wanting to join in.

Children rarely remember every activity.

They do remember how adults made them feel.

The coach who noticed they were struggling.

The member of staff who greeted them by name.

The adult who kept showing up consistently.

Relationships are often the foundation everything else is built on.

One thing we’ve learned over time is that engagement usually comes before progress.

When children feel comfortable, understood and emotionally safe within an environment, everything else tends to improve afterwards — participation, confidence, behaviour, relationships and learning.

Not every child walks into provision ready to engage immediately.

Sometimes the first step is simply feeling settled enough to join in.

Back into routine this week after half-term.

One thing you always notice after breaks is how differently children return into structure, regulation and social environments again. Some settle straight back in. Others need a bit more time, movement and support around them first.

That’s why consistency matters so much in schools and provision.

Not just rules and routines, but familiar adults, calm environments and clear expectations children can rely on.

A lot of good provision starts there.

Another busy couple of days across our May camps 👇

At Hawthorn today: Lego building, dodgeball, tagging games, arts and crafts, Floor is Lava and plenty of water games in the heat.

Over at Spinney: Nerf wars, den building, creative activities and outdoor play throughout the day.

The best camps always have variety. Different children engage in different ways, and giving them space to move between activities naturally makes a huge difference.

May half-term camps in full flow this week 👇

Day 1 at Spinney saw children straight into forest den building, Nerf battles, arts and crafts and active games across the site.

At Hawthorn, the first two days have been packed with nature-based crafts, sports, den building, party games and plenty of time spent creating shaded spaces during the hotter weather earlier in the week.

One of the best parts of camp is always seeing how differently children engage across the day. Some stay active from start to finish, while others drift between creative activities, outdoor play and quieter spaces before finding their feet.

That balance matters.
