Tayside Woodland Partnerships are a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who just want to plant trees 🌳🌳🌳 We manage a small number of woodlands in the Tayside area and welcome new volunteers to our various events and projects. The project has four aims: 1) to involve members of the community in establishing a new small woodland; 2) to increase habitat for wildlife by creating connectivit

y between existing woodlands in a region with a low proportion of tree cover; 3) to offset emissions of carbon dioxide generated by the activities of the landowner and the community members; and 4) to raise awareness of the contribution that trees can make to mitigating the risk of climate change.

At our Club Meeting yesterday, we had a very interesting talk from Tayside Woodland Partnership, represented by Charlie McCarthy (Speaker), supported by 'O' Melchizedek, Marion Young and Mark Aquilina.
Together with a slide presentation, Charlie filled us in on the aims of their charity. Their goal is to maintain the woodlands in Tayside for habitat restoration and sequestering carbon as a contribution to the Scottish Government’s target to achieve net zero emissions, and to play a part in addressing the climate and nature emergency. Scotland has 19% woodland coverage and to achieve their goal, there is a need for more trees
One of their main priorities is to establish a tree nursery on land at the end of Tomcroy Terrace and money is being invested in providing a water supply. Seeds are taken from healthy, local trees and nurtured in the nursery rather than importing saplings from other areas as these saplings may not be suitable for the local ground and weather. It isn't just a matter of planting trees anywhere, the right trees have to be planted in the right place and to date trees have been planted in Delta Park and Black Spout woods amongst many other areas in Tayside.
The work of the Woodland Partnerships is assisted through the funding and donations of generous people and organisations.
The presentation clearly interested the gathered Rotarians as there were many questions at the end!

TWP has made a grant application to the Green Living Fund for Highland Perthshire. We hope to receive funds to fully equip our new tree nursery in Pitlochry, to enable us to produce hundreds of trees to plant around the area. We are through to the public vote, which opens today. Please follow the link and vote for us today.

On Saturday our volunteers worked hard! Replacement planting and general aftercare at Alastair’s Wood, Spittalfield. We checked many of the young trees and their protective tubes and planted several new specimens — four oaks and five wild cherries (Gean). The recently established junipers are thriving.

The site, being quite exposed to the wind, shows a number of young trees leaning or becoming recumbent. Many of these are regenerating naturally from their bases and will, in time, produce new leaders along their length.
