You absolutely do not have to be a singer to come to Singing Mamas! Our songs are specially chosen to be sung by tired overwhelmed mums with babies. This means they need to easy to pick up, quick to sound amazing and not at all technical. We don't use sheet music, accompanying tracks or musical terminology. We aren't a choir and we don't perform for anyone. This removes all the expectations about how we think we should sound. It doesn't matter. The main thing is that we enjoy singing together in a safe space. You can listen, hum or sing depending on what feels comfortable for you that day. If you do think of yourself as a singer then you are free to out some harmonies in if you like, or really sing out. It's a very freeing thing! We stand in a circle not in sections so it feels much more inclusive. And you're free to come and go from the circle as you or your child needs. You can stand, dance, pop to the loo, feed, sit on a chair or on the floor with your little one. There's no expectations.

If this has made it feel less scary please come along to a session
Gannochy community hall at 10-11.30am on Tuesdays

Singing Mamas is for all women! We offer anyone 36+ weeks pregnant the change to come for FREE! Yes we are designed with new mums particularly in mind and to be accessible for them. But I found Singing Mamas later when mine were at school. And it's been a game changer for me. Mostly because of how it makes me feel. Our singing style is very very relaxed and informal without any need for previous musical experience of any kind. Beginners very much the majority here! And this is what makes it also very useful if you're struggling with a chronic illness, loneliness or your mental health. We also meet in the morning so it's easier for those with greater fatigue to get there before your spoons run out. Singing is so good for us medically. And every new mum needs a champion from a survivor. Someone to reassure them that it is hard, you're not the only one who struggles and yes it does get easier when they learn how to sleep through. This is the village you need. So if you've not got a baby or small child in tow, come along and help someone out who has - the baby TV is amazing at breaking all the ice. πŸ§‘πŸ‘Ά

A miracle occurred yesterday. The stars aligned so I was logistically and mentally able to take advantage of a very short notice offer to attend a free concert at the Edinburgh Festival, on my own. Many thanks to a very kind choir buddy for the ticket and the moral support. A few years ago this would have been impossible for several reasons, most notably my anxiety and exhaustion. I've always struggled with low mood and overwhelm and had no idea how important alone time and music were in being able to cope with life in our society. Then motherhood hit and the volcano erupted. And the fallout has been going on ever since. Singing Mamas has been so important to my recovery that I've trained to become one of their community leaders here in Perth after attending Hazel's Singing Mamas Perth group in Letham. My volcano isn't dormant yet but singing regularly has enabled me to feel so much better day to day.

If this resonates with you come along to Singing Mamas to see if we can support you too.

Another dog walk, another rant. πŸ€£πŸ™ˆ It is absolutely shocking how often people say to me that they can't sing, as I go around talking about Singing Mamas. I feel the rage so deeply that we, as women especially, have been denied our natural right to songs. I have been told some terrible stories about how as small children people were paraded as entertainment if they couldn't hold a tune for the family to laugh at. Or told to leave the school choir. Or told in front of a school class that they couldn't sing. Such cruelty really is astonishing. πŸ’”πŸ˜

If this resonates with you please come to Singing Mamas. I am part of the Natural Voice Network, who champion our natural voices as the beautiful things that they are. Humans naturally harmonise with each other - if given the chance in a relaxed and non judgemental environment! At Singing Mamas we sing very gentle simple songs, slowly learning together to give your voice and your ear time to tune in and really enjoy each song. Your traumatised inner child will have a chance to heal (and if you're bringing your baby they will love hearing your voice).

With apologies to Frozen and Kristin Bell. πŸ™ˆπŸ€£πŸ™ˆπŸ’€

But honestly as baby friendly as we are - you don't NEED to bring a baby. Treat yourself to some time off. Maybe your baby has grown up. Maybe they haven't come yet! (You can come for FREE if you're 36 weeks+ in your pregnancy!) Whatever the reason or life stage you're in, you're welcome at Singing Mamas. We champion women's wellbeing and mental health regardless of age and ability. The singing is just a tool to allow you to relax, recharge and make some supportive connections.

The guilt of not going to groups is so real. You know it should make you feel better. You know getting out will give some structure and purpose to the day. You know it's lonely at home on your own. You see others on social media seemingly finding it so easy. But the effort! It's completely exhausting just getting out the front door. Then you've got walk in and spend precious energy talking to people, engaging with other children, remembering names, all while parenting in a public unfamiliar space. Again exhausting. Often groups are busy and noisy and you leave feeling so worn out or your little one is overwhelmed. My early parenthood was dogged with sleep deprivation and anxiety so I empathise with all of the above. Singing Mamas would have been such a sanctuary. I try very hard to create a calm safe space where you can land every week to recharge and find some joy for yourself. You don't need to sing if you don't want to, but when we do you're completely released from the social load. All you need to do is sit. That's it. And then we have tea and cake. All you need to bring are yourselves and the baby bag.

**Booking is now open for next term - click on the Happity link or send me a pm. Spaces are limited as both halls are small.
