Perth Women on Wikipedia - Scotland

We've just published a Wikipedia article on Mabel Lee Milne, a nurse from Perth who died on the frontline in France. She is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Longuenesse (St Omer). the CWG Commission maintain not only the graves, but the archives and service records of all the fallen, which helped us to find information on Mabel. This talk sounds like a great opportunity to find out more about the work of the Commission.

Can't wait for this! Sylvia was definitely the most interesting of all the Pankhursts!

The P&S Team are heading through to the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh to see the Sylvia the Musical

We’re so excited to see this show, exploring the life and activism of Sylvia Pankhurst and her suffrage comrades. Theatre shows like this are so vital right now, as we see the rampant rise in misogyny across the UK— amplifying women’s voices and herstories couldn’t be more important.

We’re also lucky enough to be attending the Q&A ‘Sylvia: Her Life, Her Legacy and the Work that Remains’ after the performance, with Helen Pankhurst CBE, who convenes (and is also Sylvia Pankhurst’s granddaughter), and Professor Sarah Childs.

Our next Wikipedia editing meet-up will be on Saturday 31 October, 10-12 at Cafe St. Paul's. St Paul's will be a Spooky Square for the day that's in it, so Halloween costume is optional!

Our meet-ups are for new and experienced editors or local historians to have a coffee, a chat and some peer support with any editing or research issues they're having, or have focused time to to do some editing.

Whatever article you want to work on is up to you, or if you're looking for ideas we have a Perth Women on Wikipedia worklist. As always, all genders are welcome - just don't forget your laptop!

We had a lot of fun at our September meet-up, which saw us out on the streets of Perth taking photos for Wiki Loves Monuments - with varying levels of skill!

Some of the sites we visited were significant to women's history, like Perth Theatre - where Marjorie Dence was the first female theatre manager, Jessie Mann's birthplace on Watergate - which now has a blue plaque, and the neglected plaque of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser beside the Job Centre.

We learned a lot along the way, including the site of the old Mercat Cross, the industrial history of the Perth lade and Pullar Dyeworks, and that 28-30 High Street (aka the House of the Green) was immortalised in Carolina Oliphant's poem Kitty Reid's House. We were lucky enough to be joined by local historian Paul (co-author of Perth Street by Street) and proper photographer Dave, as well as some enthusiastic amateurs!

We were blessed with late September sun, so all our buildings have blue skies in the background. Our next meet-up will be safely back indoors for October.

📚️ Libraries are at the heart of our communities, providing spaces where stories, ideas and knowledge can be shared. Celebrated Scottish author and traditional storyteller Jess Smith, a passionate champion of libraries, will be speaking at Scone Library about the enduring importance of storytelling and the written word.

Drawing on her own childhood experiences, Jess has spent many years highlighting the culture and experiences of Scotland’s travelling community through the power of stories and a strong sense of place. During the event, she will share some of these personal accounts, along with stories from her latest book, Button Bog.

Thousands of listed sites across the UK have no freely licensed photograph anywhere online. Every entry helps close that gap, making our shared history visible to anyone, anywhere.
