Patience often begins with people knowing. A symbol can tell them for you.

October is Blindness Awareness Month.

Sight loss is not one single experience.

For some people, central vision is blurred or missing, making faces and printed text difficult to make out. For others, side vision is reduced, meaning they may bump into objects or miss things that appear to one side.

Some people experience patchy gaps in their vision. Others find bright light and glare overwhelming, or struggle to see in dim conditions. Contrast and depth perception can also be affected, making things like steps, kerbs or pouring a drink more difficult than they might appear.

What a person can see may also change depending on the lighting, the time of day or how tired they are.

Being blind does not always mean having no vision at all. Many blind people have some remaining vision, while others have little or none.

That is why awareness matters.

It means understanding that you cannot always tell when someone has a visual impairment. Not everyone uses a white cane or a guide dog, and someone may be able to read a message on their phone one moment but struggle to read a bus timetable or sign the next.

It means avoiding assumptions about what somebody can or cannot do.

And it means making information, technology, services and public spaces accessible from the outset, rather than as an afterthought.

Making that a reality is part of our work at The Partially Sighted Society. We support people to make the most of their remaining vision and maintain their independence through specialist low vision assessments, adaptive technology, practical advice, emotional support and social activities.

💪 Dan’s back at the gym! 💪

Another really good session today for Dan, working hard and giving everything a go. This time he even took on the battle ropes for the first time — and did a brilliant job! 👏🔥

It’s great to see his confidence growing each session and to see him trying new equipment and pushing himself that little bit further.

Keep it going, Dan! 💪

💪🌟 DANIEL IS BACK AT IT! 🌟💪

Today was Daniel’s second day back at the gym, and what an outstanding session he had! 👏

Daniel showed incredible determination, giving every exercise his full effort and refusing to give up, even when it became challenging. Every repetition completed and every machine attempted was another positive step forward.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from turning up, believing in yourself and continuing to try and that is exactly what Daniel is doing. 💙

Everyone at Eden Vision Buddies is incredibly proud of you, Daniel. Keep going, keep pushing and keep believing in yourself, this is only the beginning of your journey! 🙌🔥

🚌 AND WE’RE OFF TO BEAMISH! 🎉

Eden Vision Buddies have set off for our day out at Beamish Museum! 👏

We’ve got a brilliant group with us today and we’re looking forward to a full day of exploring, laughs, good company and making some great memories together. 💙

Days like today are what Eden Vision Buddies is all about, bringing people together, reducing isolation, building friendships and giving everyone the opportunity to get out, socialise and enjoy new experiences.

Could Marcus Wareing help you feel more confident in the kitchen?

A brand new BBC programme with chef Marcus Wareing is looking for blind and partially sighted people who could benefit from expert help, practical advice and fresh inspiration in the kitchen.

The programme would like to hear from people adapting to accessible kitchen tools, building their confidence, or developing new culinary skills. It may also suit anyone searching for quicker, more affordable ways to cook around work, family life and other responsibilities, or anyone who feels stuck making the same meals and would welcome new ideas, techniques and a renewed enjoyment of cooking.

Whatever your circumstances or level of experience, the production team would love to hear your story and explore how Marcus could help make cooking easier, more enjoyable and more accessible.

Filming will take place in Woking over three days between 2 and 8 September 2026.

We’re really excited to invite everyone along for a very special and inspiring afternoon at the Quaker Meeting House in Penrith.

Come and hear the incredible story of The Blind Chocolatier, learn about his passion for chocolate and how he continues to follow his dreams. ❤️
