SUNRAY TWOSIX – Community Brew & a Chat

What an absolute pleasure to spend time at the Clan MacQuarrie Community Centre for a Community Brew & Chat session and to meet members of Catch 23 and the local community.

We had the opportunity to share the story behind SUNRAY TWOSIX, our journey across the Hebrides, and our mission to raise awareness of veteran mental health and wellbeing. In return, we heard inspiring stories from others about the positive impact that creativity, connection, and community can have on people’s lives.

A huge thank you to Rebecca and her members for the making the trip and for the incredible work they do in supporting mental health and wellbeing across the Western Isles. Their dedication to creating safe, welcoming spaces where people can come together, share experiences, and support one another is making a real difference in communities throughout the islands.

It was a reminder that whether through art, writing, music, conversation, or simply a cup of tea, creativity has the power to connect us, build resilience, and help people realise they are never alone.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to chat with us and share their stories. We leave inspired and encouraged by the amazing work being done here.

What a way to start your day. We were blessed with blue sky’s, sunshine and a couple of seals 🦭 as CHARLIE Team went for an early morning walk along Liniclate beach.
The landlord at our current accommodation, Nick, used to be a firefighter on the islands. He told us that when he struggled with his mental health he’d go down to the beach and listen to the waves breaking on the beach.
Sitting on the beach this morning I totally understand why.

SUNRAY TWOSIX CHARLIE Team, Mac & Geoff, went straight for the top. It was a steep climb but totally worth it for the view. Wow!

Heaval is the highest hill on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra, Scotland. The highest point is 383 metres high above sea level and it is located 1.5 km northeast of Castlebay.

Mac & Geoff completed the climb in about an hour. Not too bad for two old dogs in their 60s. 🤣 When they got back to ground zero they headed straight for the local curry house, Kisimul. Delicious 😋

SUNRAY TWOSIX - Day 3

Another fantastic stop on the SUNRAY journey at The Uist Soap Company in South Uist.

Inspired by the pristine landscapes, seaweed, botanicals and wild beauty of the Outer Hebrides, Joanne’s handcrafted soaps are made using traditional cold-process methods and a real passion for quality.

You may notice Jason is missing from the photo. As an ex-submariner, he took one look at a shop full of soap and decided there was nothing there for him. Old habits die hard, when you’ve spent years underwater, personal hygiene is apparently considered an optional extra! 😂⚓

The rest of the team enjoyed a warm Hebridean welcome and left smelling considerably better than we arrived.

SUNRAY TWOSIX – Day 3

Barra to Uist

Today we left Barra behind and made the short ferry crossing to Eriskay before heading north through the Uists.

With the sea all around and the islands stretching ahead, it’s a reminder that every journey is made one crossing at a time. For SUNRAY TWOSIX, this isn’t just about the miles travelled—it’s about the conversations, connections, and raising awareness of veteran mental health in communities across the Hebrides.

Onward through the islands. The journey continues.

Forty three years ago today, June 8th, was the day HMS Plymouth was caught out in the open water of Falkland Sound. HMS Plymouth was hit by Argentine Air Force fighter-bombers, experiencing damage from four exploding bombs and multiple cannon fire. All bombs failed to detonate, however one triggered a depth charge and caused a fire, while others damaged the ship's funnel and mortar handling room. Despite the damage caused none of the crew were killed.
The crew did what they were trained to do and I am forever grateful to the F126 Crew of 82, my Band of Brothers. 🫡
