Wednesday evening, Ambassador Jeroen Cooreman had the privilege of unveiling a commemorative plaque at 8 New College Lane, which honours the building's historic role in sheltering Belgian refugees during the First World War.
This meaningful event, organised in partnership with the Oxford University Belgian Society, gathered members of the Belgian community from Oxford and Cambridge, as well as students and academics.
The Warden of New College, Miles Young, thoughtfully reflected on the College's longstanding connection with Belgium. Citing the writings of former Warden H. A. L. Fisher and the poetry of Thomas Hardy, he highlighted the importance of remembering this “almost completely forgotten” chapter of history.
After the unveiling, guests had the opportunity to explore an exhibition curated by local historian, Liz Woolley, and College Archivist, Michael Stansfield.
We are sincerely grateful to Fergus Wessel for the beautifully crafted plaque and to our friends at New College, Oxford for hosting us.
