Crush the Body Triangle: Top Body Triangle Escape with Hand Assist

*The body triangle is one of the most suffocating and frustrating forms of back control in Jiu-Jitsu* Not only does it drain your gas tank and restrict your breathing, but it also completely shuts down traditional hip-sliding back escapes. To get out, you have to break the lock—but doing so carelessly will leave your neck wide open for the rear-naked choke.

In this breakdown, we look at how to systematically dismantle and escape the *top body triangle using a hand assist*. We cover how to safely transition your hands from defending your neck to framing and prying the locked foot. By combining the hand assist with precise hip shifts and shoulder drops, you can pop the triangle open, clear the legs, and force your way back into a dominant top position without getting choked in the process.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*
*Prioritizing Defense:* Why protecting your neck and securing the choking arm must always come before attacking the legs.
*The Hand Assist:* How to safely use your hands to frame the top knee and peel the locking foot without exposing your arms to submissions.
*The Hip Shift:* Dropping your weight and angling your hips to put immense pressure on their locked ankle, forcing it to open.
*Clearing the Lock:* Preventing them from re-locking or transitioning to a standard hook once the triangle is broken.
*Turning the Corner:* Capitalizing on the broken lock to turn into their guard or scramble to top control.

When your opponent posts on an arm or leg to stabilize their back control, escaping becomes a completely different game.* The posted rear mount is a highly controlling position where the attacker uses the floor to reinforce their hooks and seatbelt, making traditional sliding escapes incredibly difficult.

In this breakdown, we look at how to effectively escape the posted rear mount using the *hand assist method*. Because your opponent’s positioning changes depending on which arm they are posting with, your escape must adapt. We cover both variations: how to escape when they are heavy on the *over arm (choking side)* and how to escape when they are heavy on the *under arm side*. By using your hands to frame and assist your hip movement, you can break their structure and force a scramble back to safety.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*

*Understanding the Post:* Why opponents use the posted rear mount and how it changes their weight distribution.

*The Over Arm (Choking Side) Escape:* How to use your hand assist to clear the choking arm, drop your shoulders, and slide out the "safe side."

*The Under Arm Side Escape:* How to strip their control when they post on the underhook side, using your hand to frame their knee/hip and turn in.

*The Hand Assist Mechanic:* Why using your hands to pry off hooks or frame against the post is crucial when your hips are stuck.

*Regaining Top Position:* How to capitalise on the space you create to turn into your opponent and secure top control.

When your opponent has a tight seatbelt and stubborn hooks, sometimes the best way out is to slide

right out the bottom door. While traditional back escapes rely on falling to the "safe side" and putting your back on the mat, the forward scoop escape focuses on dropping your hips, killing their hooks, and sliding forward out of the pocket to completely break their chest-to-back connection.

In this breakdown, we explore how to utilize the forward scoop to systematically dismantle your opponent's back control. We cover how to safely hand-fight to protect your neck, drop your hips below their center of gravity, and use the "scoop" grip on their leg to pry off their hooks. This escape is incredibly frustrating for the attacker and allows you to transition smoothly into a top position or even a leg entanglement of your own

Getting your back taken is arguably the most dangerous position in Jiu-Jitsu-but it doesn't mean the round is over. While traditional back escapes focus on sliding your hips to the mat, the backwards roll (or shoulder roll) escape offers a dynamic, unexpected way to completely reverse the position and end up on top.

In this breakdown, we look at how to safely utilize the backwards roll to dismantle your opponent's back control. We cover the absolute non-negotiables: securing your neck, building the correct bridge, and choosing the right shoulder to roll over so you do not spike your own head. When executed correctly, this escape uses your opponent's own forward pressure against them, dumping them to the mat while you take the dominant top position.

Alhamdulillah - Our Women’s BJJ Course Has Begun! 🥋🌸

What a brilliant start to the first session of our second Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu course!

It was inspiring to see so many sisters step onto the mats, challenge themselves and support one another. For some, it was their very first experience of martial arts - but everyone showed great courage, focus and determination.

Islam encourages us to look after our health, develop strength and be able to protect ourselves. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.”
- Sahih Muslim

Whether you joined to build confidence, improve your fitness, learn self-defence or enjoy the sisterhood, you all did amazingly well.

Jazakum Allahu khayran to everyone who attended and helped create such a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.

This is only the beginning, insha’Allah. Rest well, keep hydrated, and we look forward to seeing you back on the mats next week! 💪🏽

Escaping the mount is priority number one—but why settle for Half Guard when you can go straight on the attack? The traditional elbow escape (or knee-elbow escape) is the absolute foundation of mount defense. Usually, this escape is used to simply recover the guard, but with a slight adjustment in your hip movement and leg placement, you can turn this defensive fundamental into a devastating , already be underneath them, locking up their legs and threatening the sweep or ankle lock!

*What you’ll learn in this video:*
*The Fundamental Frame:* Creating a strong elbow-to-knee connection to block their hips and prevent them from climbing high on your chest.
*The Shrimp & Insertion:* Bridging and hip-escaping to safely bring your bottom knee across their center line.
*The Butterfly Transition:* Pummeling the escaping leg to the inside position to control their distance and create a wedge.
*The SLX Entry:* Elevating their center of gravity to make them weightless, allowing you to lock your legs perfectly into Single Leg X.

Don't just escape the mount—go straight on the offensive.** The traditional elbow escape (sh*****ng) is a fundamental tool, but when a heavy opponent pins your arms or smothers your elbows, creating space can feel impossible. By switching from an elbow frame to a **palm frame**, you can create a rigid, bone-supported structure to force their hips back and open up the perfect angle for your knee.

In this breakdown, we look at how to properly utilize the palm frame to safely create distance without exposing your arms to submissions. But we don't stop at simply recovering half guard. We show you how to use that exact momentum to weave your leg inside, elevate your opponent's center of gravity, and drop them directly into **Single Leg X Guard (Ashi Garami)**. From the absolute worst position to a dominant sweeping and leg-locking entanglement in one fluid motion!

**What you’ll learn in this video:**
* **The Palm Frame:** Why replacing the elbow with the heel of your palm creates a stronger, uncollapsible frame against the hip/knee.
* **Creating Space:** The correct bridging and hip-escaping mechanics to safely bring your knee through the gap.
* **The Leg Weave:** How to transition the escaping leg to the inside position to control their distance.
* **Entering SLX:** Elevating their hips and locking your legs into a tight Single Leg X to immediately

threaten the sweep or the straight ankle lock.
