Advent begins in the dark.

A quiet day with the Discalced Carmelites: two talks, long silence, and time to let the season do its work before Christmas arrives.

Into the Night — longing and darkness, following St John of the Cross from desire into the night where God comes closer than the senses can bear.

Towards the Dawn — watching and promise, keeping the lamp lit with Elijah, John the Baptist and Mary.

Between them: adoration, confession, Mass, lunch, and the kind of silence that is hard to find in December.

Saturday 5 December, 9.30am–4pm
Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Simon Stock, 41 Kensington Church Street, London W8 4BB

🔥 Living Flame: October 2026 Programme

Join the Discalced Carmelite Young Adult Ministry this month as we explore Prayer as Friendship with St. Teresa of Avila.

Eight hundred years ago, a band of hermits living in caves on Mount Carmel asked the Patriarch of Jerusalem for a rule of life.

What Albert gave them was a page or two. It has formed every Carmelite since. At its centre: remain in your cell, meditating day and night on the law of the Lord.

This month at Living Flame we read the whole thing together — yes, all of it. It takes fifteen minutes.

Then the question it forces on you: if one page could shape saints for eight centuries, what is shaping us? For most of us, the honest answer is an algorithm.

So this month we do something about it.

I — The Word. Psalm 1: the two ways, and the tree planted by streams of water. The verse the whole Rule is built on. Speaker: Fr Joseph

II — The School. The Rule of St Albert read aloud in full, with its history and its genius unfolded — why structure is not the enemy of freedom but its condition. Speaker: Fr John McGowan

III — The World. The workshop. Everyone present writes their own rule of life: prayer, Mass, Confession, sleep, the phone. Small, concrete, keepable. You leave with it on paper. Speaker: Tasso

IV — The Flame. Holy hour. We bring our written rules and lay the coming months under the gaze of the One the whole structure exists for. Speaker: Fr Jerome

Our Living Flame program for August! Following a little rethink, we've decided to focus on one particular idea and/or saint every month between now and the end of the year.

Wherever you are in your faith, the remarkable life and work of Edith Stein will always serve as an invaluable teacher and guide. So please do come along and join us in exploring her extraordinary journey from a youth in the Jewish faith, through atheism, into the realm of psychology, sudden conversion upon reading St. Teresa of Avila on one fateful night, and final heroism in the concentration camps of the second world war.

Staring us off will be a talk on the scriptures that most closely aligned with her life and realisation of the Truth of our Lord.

There is a beautiful freedom in remembering that our lives aren't measured by secular status or the exhausting pressure of self-achievement, but by the love we give and receive. St. John anchors us in the bright certainty that goodwill outlasts all the noise of the world, leaving us free to notice the goodness around us.

Where have you caught a glimpse of that foundational love in your life this week?

🔥 The names history forgot, but God remembers.

Today, June 30th, the Church celebrates the First Martyrs of the See of Rome. In 64 AD, the mad Emperor Nero used the early Christian community as a scapegoat for a massive fire that leveled the city.

The Roman historian Tacitus records the horror: these ordinary believers were sewn into animal skins to be hunted, crucified, or literally used as living torches to light up Nero's night games.

But terror backfired. The unshakeable peace, courage, and radiant faith of these nameless Christians completely stunned the pagan world, sparking a movement of conversions that eventually transformed the empire.

We celebrate them today right after the great Apostles Peter & Paul because it sends a powerful message: the foundations of our faith weren’t just built by famous teachers, but by ordinary, hidden witnesses who decided that Christ was worth everything.

You don't need a massive platform or a famous name to build the Kingdom. You just need a daily, courageous love that refuses to compromise.

Holy Protomartyrs of Rome, pray for us! 🏛️✨

🏰 Ever felt like your inner life is a maze? In 1577, St. Teresa of Ávila wrote The Interior Castle—a foundational text of Carmelite spirituality. She compares the soul to a diamond castle with seven "Mansions." At the center dwells God, and our spiritual journey is the adventure of moving inward.

Carmelite tradition breaks these 7 Mansions into 3 classic stages of growth. Swipe through the carousel to see the journey! 👇

🔥 STAGE 1: THE PURGATIVE WAY (Mansions 1–3)
Breaking old habits, detaching from distractions, and building a foundation of prayer.

Mansion 1 (Outermost Rooms): You've started praying but are highly distracted by worldly noise and attachments ("reptiles").

Mansion 2 (The Struggle): You begin hearing God's call deeper through books or friends. It's a daily war against old habits.

Mansion 3 (Stability): You have a structured prayer life and avoid major sins. The main trap here is spiritual pride or getting comfortable.

💡 STAGE 2: THE ILLUMINATIVE WAY (Mansions 4–5)
Moving from our own efforts to letting God do the heavy lifting.

Mansion 4 (Consolations): Prayer shifts from thoughts to experience. God quiets your mind and fills your heart with supernatural peace.

Mansion 5 (The Cocoon): Like a caterpillar transforming, the soul is entirely absorbed in God’s love during prayer, emerging deeply changed.

✨ STAGE 3: THE UNITIVE WAY (Mansions 6–7)
The highest peaks of deep intimacy and unbroken union with Christ.

Mansion 6 (The Trials): The longest, most intense phase. It pairs profound mystical joy with interior darkness and feeling misunderstood by the world.

Mansion 7 (Spiritual Marriage): The ultimate goal. Unshakable, quiet serenity in the innermost room where God dwells—overflowing into practical everyday love and active service.
