1963 - Over 60 years ago!
Recognise yourself? or anyone else?
Thought about how nice it would be to have a dip in that water again? Well, you can!
There are now many adult sessions for Overton residents, plus 'Retiree sessions' on Tuesday & Thursday mornings 11:00-12:00hr with tea and cake!
For improved accessibility the recent refurbishment included staircase-style steps into the water.
If you don't want to take a dip, how about becoming a volunteer?
Hope to see you there.
Meantime, please do let us know if you are in the photo

🏪 A look back at the history of Overton’s Co-op!

Originally redeveloped in 1987, part of the site once served as the Co-op manager’s house, with the original façade carefully retained to preserve the character of Wi******er Street. By 2006, the completed building had become a familiar part of village life.

In 2013, the store underwent a major refurbishment, bringing a modern new layout and an even wider range of products for the community.

Dr Tom Ridler, Chairman of Overton Parish Council at the time, said the store fulfilled “a vital role in the commercial heart of the village,” highlighting both its importance for day-to-day shopping and the Southern Co-operative’s generous £500 contribution towards a community defibrillator for the village centre. ❤️

📍 Located at 15–17 Wi******er Street, the Co-op continues to serve the community today.

The part of the Co-op site that was the manager’s house. The facade was retained as part of the 1987 redevelopment so as to be in keeping with other buildings in Wi******er Street. The inside ground floor of the former house was given over to retail space.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Overton 🏡✨
Did you know the beautiful Overton Community Centre began life as a Victorian primary school in 1868?
This stunning Grade II Listed building, originally known as the Overton National School, was funded by local solicitor George Lamb on the site of the former Poyntz Arms inn. Built in striking Tudor-Gothic style with flint walls, red brick detailing, steep tiled roofs and its distinctive bell turret, it has stood proudly at the crossroads of Wi******er Street for over 150 years.
Inside, boys and girls were once taught separately, with the original entrance signs still visible today. The attached school house was home to the headmaster, while generations of Overton children passed through its doors before the school eventually moved to Lordsfield in 1978.
Rather than losing this historic building, the village came together to give it a new purpose. Since 1978, the Community Centre has been run by the Overton Community Association and remains at the centre of village life — home to the Library, Parish Council, Playgroup, exhibitions, meetings, clubs and community events.
From coaching inn… to Victorian school… to thriving community hub — this remarkable building continues to shape the story of Overton. ❤️
