“I'm sure you will be aware of some of the changes that are happening in the ICB and the NHS Trusts across Bradford District and Craven. These changes are some of the most dramatic we've seen for decades and there are likely to be implications for how we as a sector interact with the new health system, most notably how procurement/contracting and commissioning may change over the medium and long term.

We intend to brief the wider VCSE sector about these changes and then hold conversations in each of the Community Partnership Areas in June. We very much hope you can join us.”

- Sam Keighley, VCSE System Lead in Bradford District and Craven with the Health and Care System.

Last month, the VCSA was lucky to speak to Chloe from Step 2 about her time so far as a VCSE Sector Advocate in Health and Care...

Chloe shared her journey and thoughts so far, especially stressing how important it is to step out of your comfort zone to grow. Chloe shared:

"I was like, really, can I do that? But then I thought to myself, you know, you don’t grow in your comfort zone. So, even if I don’t get chosen, I’m still going to put myself out there just to see, for the experience of speaking in front of people.”

She also spoke passionately about how she saw her role as an Advocate making a difference.

"It was an online meeting, and I remember there were all these people that I’d never met before. I’d heard of them, but I’d never met them, and I was thinking to myself, what can I bring to this? These people are more professional than me, you know, they must know more than me.

But, actually, I brought a lot of points across to them that they hadn’t considered. I asked about waiting lists and how that would be managed, because none of the bids had mentioned that in any of their bids."

She left the meeting feeling more confident in what she could bring to the table in discussions with the Health System.

“I walked out of there feeling more confident. I always think that I must have all the answers and I don’t. Even just my little bit that I brought was a missing piece to the puzzle.”

To read more about Chloe's work as an Advocate, read our case study here: https://www.thevcsalliance.org.uk/chloes-experience/

And if Chloe has inspired you (we know she has inspired the VCSA team!), and you want to know more about the VCSE Advocacy that the VCS Alliance supports, please email Nadine our Sector Voice Lead at [email protected]

Join our free DSPT webinar in May! ✅

Next month, we're holding a webinar for Bradford District and Craven VCSE sector organisations to get free support with their Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) for 2026.

Remember, the deadline to submit your DSPT this year is June 30! ⚠

There will be a short presentation on the DSPT and where to get support in completing it, and then Ele, our Impact and Insight Manager, will be answering your questions and offering support.

More and more commissioners are now requesting organisations to have a DSPT in order to access funding opportunities. A DSPT is also mandatory for all organisations working with NHS patients' data. If you are commissioned by or get a grant through the Health and Care System in Bradford District and Craven, you MUST have a DSPT and resubmit it every year!

📅 Monday 11 May
🕑 10:30am to 11:30am

21/04/2026

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jeanette Sunderland, who was well-known for all her hard work with, for and alongside young people in Bradford District.

Jeanette was a person who gave her time, her energy and her considerable talents to many causes over the years. She was a tireless advocate for the community, for children and for those whose voices too often go unheard.

From volunteering at summer camps with children, to being Chair of Trustees at the Springfield Youth Centre, she ensured that young people in some of Bradford’s most vulnerable communities had somewhere to go, and something to do. Her trusteeships were not just titles, they were commitments from a person who believed deeply in the power of communities.

Jeanette embodied the spirit of our sector in its entirety, a person who genuinely cared. Her legacy lives in the lives of those she helped along the way.

We extend our deepest condolences to her husband, Andrew, her daughter Rachel, her family, friends, colleagues and all who knew her.
