“When Disability Intersects with Race, Gender, and Class”

Disability doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

It intersects with race, gender, and class—shaping how people are believed, supported, or ignored. Yet in many faith conversations, these lived realities are still overlooked.

At Ascendah CIC, we believe faith spaces must include the voices of those at the margins. When disability, race, gender, and class are acknowledged together, conversations about faith become more honest, compassionate, and just.

Real inclusion begins by listening.

At Ascendah CIC, we often hear powerful stories from people navigating illness, injustice, and difficult life experiences. While listening to these stories can sometimes be emotionally heavy, they can also reveal something powerful — vicarious resilience.

Vicarious resilience is the strength and hope we gain from witnessing the courage, perseverance, and healing of others. When we hear how someone continues to push forward despite adversity, it can inspire us, shift our perspective, and remind us of the resilience within our communities.

It shows us that even in the face of hardship, people are capable of growth, courage, and transformation.

By sharing experiences and supporting one another, we build stronger, more compassionate communities — where resilience is not just personal, but shared.
