🌟Gold DofE Award recipient 2026🌟

A huge congratulations to Dan, a Service Instructor from RAF Odiham who was presented with his Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award this week!

Dan joined many others at Buckingham Palace including other members of the Royal Air Force and Royal Air Force Air Cadets for this fantastic and prestigious ceremony, celebrating his success and hard work for over a year in achieving the highest level of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award 🥇

Dan had a fantastic day, in incredibly warm weather, celebrating with other Air, Army and Sea Cadets and other young people listening to inspiring talks from the Duke of Edinburgh and Entrepreneur Sara Davies. He even had time to enjoy a lovely lunch! Dan's achievement shows that its not just Cadets that can achieve great things as a member of the RAFAC.

Well done to all the recipients, and well done Dan!!

DofE is just one of the activities which the Air Cadets can do. This won't be the only Gold award celebration for 1827 Odiham Squadron RAFAC this year - watch this space!

🏃‍♂️ Supporting the Hook Fun Run 🏃‍♀️

1827 (Odiham) Sqn were proud to support this year’s Hook Fun Run, cheering on the runners and keeping them hydrated with water and fruit as they crossed the finish line!

As ever, the Cadets supporting this event were a shining example of how good our young adults are, by being professional, supportive and full of encouragement for the runners completing the 'fun' run! Not only were we supporting the event, but some of our Cadets gave up their Sunday morning to run the event as well!

A huge well done also goes to those Cadets, who not only took part, but came back with some impressive results!

🥇 Cdt Bahia took the title of fastest fun runner, finishing in an incredible time of just over 10 minutes!
🥈 Sgt Gair followed closely behind with an equally impressive time of just over 11 minutes.
👏 Cdt Wilson also had a fabulous run taking it all in his stride… he also proved his talents didn’t stop at running, he entertained us with his apple juggling skills at the finish line! 🍎

Well done to everyone involved. The squadron received lots of praise and thanks from the event organisers, and every cadet represented 1827 brilliantly. 👏

1827 continuing to climb high on the climbing wall at RAF Odiham sponsored by The Boeing Company 🧗‍♂️

Swapping their blue uniform for more suitable clothing, some of our cadets spent the evening on the Station's indoor climbing wall, practicing their rope skills and pushing themselves physically and mentally to scale the wall!

Huge thanks to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wing RAF Air Cadets Adventure Training team for staffing the event enabling us to do this on an evening!

Keep an eye out on here for more photos of more climbing evenings planned in 2026!

Last week, our Squadron stepped back in time 81 years to VE day in 1945… What a night it was 🇬🇧✨

The Sqn was transformed with wartime flags, bunting, posters and the sounds of the era filling the room, including Vera Lynn classics We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover. From the moment cadets walked in, they were immersed in the spirit of VE Day.

The evening began with a presentation exploring:
• What VE Day stands for
• Why the nation celebrated on 8th May 1945
• Why the day was also filled with sadness for so many families who had lost loved ones
• The reminder that whilst victory was declared in Europe, the war in Asia continued

We spoke about how Winston Churchill called it “YOUR victory” because the Victory belonged not just to those on the front line, but to an entire nation pulling together. From Government and senior leaders, to women in factories, Land Girls, families living through rationing, the “make do and mend” "Dig for Victory' generation, and parents making heart-breaking sacrifices to keep their children safe through evacuation.

The cadets reflected on the courage of children who boarded trains not knowing where they were going… or if they would ever return home.

And then… the taste test began 😅

Wartime food tasting included:
🥫 SPAM — surprisingly loved!
🐟 Sardines in tomato sauce — enjoyed by most!
🥛 Condensed & evaporated milk — not quite a fan favourite!
☕ Beef Oxo as a coffee replacement — mixed reviews!
🍞 Sugar sandwiches — a new found love
🍌 Fake banana sandwiches (parsnip, sugar & banana essence!) — an unexpected HIT!
🍚 And of course… rice pudding for dessert!

We also held a traditional tea party with buffet food, homemade wartime tea cake, jam tarts, Homemade Union Jack cake and plenty of tea ☕🍰

To finish the evening, cadets shared family WW2 stories and memorabilia before taking part in a VE Day quiz.

A night of learning, laughter, reflection and remembrance and a reminder of the resilience, sacrifice and unity shown by a generation we must never forget.

What. A. Night.

Over the early May Bank Holiday weekend, some of our Cadets got out and about on their Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions!

Both Silver and Gold expeditions were underway in the challenging conditions, including horizontal rain, super low cloud, ice, gusty winds and of course, blazing sunshine!

The DofE award is just one of the things that the RAFAC offers, and is something that we do at 1827 Sqn very well!

A huge well done to the cadets for going the extra mile (literally...!) and doing this fantastic thing on their Bank Holiday weekend!! The cadets even got a bonus ice cream too!

What were you up to on the weekend?!

Some of our Cadets were lucky enough to learn the basics of Paddlesports in Farnborough! Basking in the glorious sunshine, 6 Cadets and 2 staff took to the water under the direction of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wing RAF Air Cadets Adventure Training Team and learnt the basics of Paddlesports! The cadets had a fantastic time and were really happy at the end of a tiresome day! Thanks to the staff for supporting this fantastic opportunity! What a way to spend a sunny weekend! Its not just our young people's success on Squadron we celebrate, but also what they do outside of the RAFAC too!

We are incredibly proud to announce that one of our cadets, Sgt Lawrence, represented Robert May's School as the Team Manager of Team Atomic at the STEM Racing UK National Finals last week.

This prestigious national competition brings together the top STEM Racing teams from across the country, where students design, engineer, build, brand, and race miniature cars! Teams are assessed not only on racing performance, and engineering quality, but also skiils which the Royal Air Force Air Cadets teaches our young people including project/time management, leadership, communication and presentation skills, all of which are judged by industry professionals.

Competing at this level is no easy task. It demands exceptional teamwork, technical skill, creativity, and professionalism, especially as the manager of the team! Sgt Lawrence and Team Atomic showed exceptional commitment to the challenge, enduring countless hours of hardwork and determination, ultimately paying off as the WINNERS 🥇of the National Finals racing event! What an incredible achievement!

Thank you also to the STEM Racing UK staff and volunteers who make these opportunities possible for young engineers across the UK.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to have RAF Odiham 's Station Commander and Force Commander joining us to celebrate . Our fabulous Cadets, delivered a variety of presentations about inspirational women and their achievements in the Royal Air Force! Excellently presented, the Cadets showcased the incredible work of the women, past and present, highlighting successes and the contributions to the Royal Air Force, helping shape the RAF today.
Once completed, the Station Commander, and Force Commander both talked about their time in the RAF and what international women's day meant for them.
Finally we were able to re-present the Force Commanders Cadet award to Cdt Paton!
What an amazing evening and a great way to celebrate the amazing women we have the in the RAF and the Royal Air Force Air Cadets

We are very proud to have had one of our Cpls attend and pass this course, gaining his DTC(I) qualification. This is no easy task and involves performing at an incredibly high level in both dress and drill. Cadets are tested on their knowledge with a written exam before being assessed on their delivery of a lesson of drill to their peers.

Well done, Cpl Dilley and thank you to the staff who ran the course.
