Hi everyone – after the sadness of losing Cilla on Saturday, I’m so sorry to tell you that we had to have dear Lisa put to sleep today.😢😢😢
Lisa had been suffering from a snuffly/snotty nose for a little while but many of our flock have ‘seasonal snots’ and it usually passes when the pollen calms down a bit. She’d been her usual active and feisty self, not needing any pain relief for arthritis unlike most of our oldies. She had a happy time at shearing on Friday and on Saturday seemed absolutely fine, although she was a bit quiet after Cilla was put to sleep. Yesterday morning she was out of sorts, very snotty and walking backwards at some points but after some pain relief she seemed better, was walking forwards and was out grazing with the oldies gang again. Last night she took another turn for the worse with very heavy breathing and this morning hadn’t perked up although was still capable of standing, so we called an emergency vet to see her. The vet thought pneumonia with a possible underlying lung condition like a tumour, maybe coming to the fore after shearing with the change in the weather. It wasn’t fair to keep her going as realistically the chances of recovery were very low, so the deed was done and she passed quickly, which is always a blessing. She was much loved here and a huge character – I know she’s really going to be missed 💔💔💔
Lisa came to us in February 2018 as an older ewe from a commercial flock looking for a safe retirement. Although she had a friend in Mary-Kate, she immediately palled up with Hilda the Herdwick and they became the ‘naughty girls’, always looking for mischief and treats. She was a ‘calendar girl’ too at one point, with her cute smiley face poking through gates and the stock fence for treats! Quietly persistent, Lisa gained a reputation for being assertive but very loveable – she has been a real favourite with the team and volunteers for her winning ways and calm demeanour. Healthwise she’s been no bother at all right until these last couple of days – her feet have always been sound, she’s loved her food without exception, and she’s always been a good girl for foot trims and the shearer.
For the past few months as it became more apparent that she was getting on – although still all there and feisty! – we’d moved her up to our oldies paddock to be initially with her friend Mary-Kate and then Cilla. She proved to be the leader of her little gang and made sure everyone knew that treats came to her first and under no circumstances could anyone else have dibs. We loved this about her – and of course those gorgeous eyes staring you down from her dappled nose made us all putty in her hooves.
So many lovely photos of Lisa to share with you, taken by all of us, including one of our wonderful volunteer Jane wearing a hoodie she’d knitted using some of Lisa’s yarn. It’s been a really tough May Bank Holiday here but seeing those happy photos reminds us that Lisa had a good long life and some special years with us which we’ll never forget.
As always, donations towards her vet and cremation costs – however small – are very greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support which means so much.
