Nottingham HF Rambling CLUB

Nottingham HF Rambling CLUB 100th year 2023 What we are about:
Nottingham HF is a friendly, long established walking club. Coach fare is £10. These usually take place in the summer.

We run fortnightly coaches mainly to Derbyshire and Staffordshire, but also to Leicestershire and Yorkshire. The use of coaches allows us to plan more interesting linear walks rather than circular walks based upon a car-park. On each trip three levels of walk are available: 10-12 miles, 7-8 miles and 5-6 miles and are led by experienced walkers. Coach pick-ups are at Keyworth Square, County Hall (

West Bridgford), then in the centre of town on Maid Marian Way (outside Tescos) and close to The Nuthall (Nottingham Road, A610). For more details on coach pick-up points (including parking), other walks, holidays and social events see the club website: www.nottinghamhframblingclub.co.uk. You can also find us on: https://www.meetup.com/Nottingham-HF-Rambling-Club/ If you would like to join one of our trips you should reserve a place by phoning the number supplied with the walk. We also organise Wednesday car rambles meeting at a pub and involving circular walks that usually last the morning of about 4-5 miles ending in a pub lunch. These walks are usually nearer to home in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. We also organise fun days out on Wednesdays including Alpaca walks, Boules Matches, Croquet Matches and Barge Trips on local canals.

Photos from the long walk (about 10 miles) on the Sunday coach ramble 20 April. Twelve of us did a circular walk with a couple of ascents - Longnor, Glutton Bridge, Hollinsclough, Trig Point 424m, Hole Carr, Barrow Moor, Shining Ford, Sycamore Farm, Over Boothlow, Longnor. Beautiful views, newborn lamb and an Irish (?) postbox along the way.

Photos taken during the Notts HF circular Wednesday walk from Underwood to Felley Priory and back. The walk was about 5.5 miles. Although 9 people signed up, 4 of us actually turned up. You all missed a stunning walk up to the bluebell woods. The fee of £7.50 included admission to the gardens as well. We enjoyed an excellent lunch outside at the café.

Photos taken on the Thursday 9th April - the last walking day of our Notts HF holiday based at Church Stretton. Started off a fairly mild day in the shelter of the hills but as we climbed up onto the moors it started blowing a gale with occasional showers. A drop in temperature today of about 8 or 9 degrees. Walked through a golf course on the way down. Some lady golfers were blown down the hill with the weight of their huge golf bags. More like crazy golf. We spent about an hour in a café/bar near the end to dry out and warm up.

Photos taken on the short walk again today - Wednesday 8th April on our Notts HF Holiday based at Church Stretton. Even more 'scorchio' today. It was 'A Perfect Day' as the song goes. Passed a prefabricated tin church - constructed before Ikea had even thought of the idea. Visited the site of the 'Bog Village' and walked up onto the ridge overlooking the valley below. Very grateful to get inside the cool of the pub at the end. A refreshing chilled drink - raspberry juice and tonic water before getting on the coach back to the hotel.

Photos taken on the circular medium walk on Tuesday 7th April of our Notts HF Church Stretton Holiday. We started out from the Longmynd Hotel down along the valley to Little Stretton a rather 'oldy-worldy' village with quite a few new houses built to blend in. Then turned left and started a steep climb on to the ridge at the top. Marvelous views all round. By midday it was 'scorchio'. We descended back down into Church Stretton. Ended up in a café called 'Berrys'. Banana milkshake with a scoop of ice-cream on top to finish the day. Total distance 7.5 miles.

The 3rd day of our holiday based at Church Stretton - Easter Monday 6th April. A day off from walking - a sightseeing trip to Ludlow. In the morning we explored the town as a group hence the photos. In the afternoon I wandered around the open air market in the square opposite the castle. I must have spent enough to keep the town's economy going for the rest of the week.

Photos taken on the 2nd day of our Notts HF holiday based at Church Stretton. Sunday 5th April - Easter Day. Again on the circular short walk, this time of about 5 miles. Starting and finishing at an information centre with a one eyed woolly mammoth outside. 'In the land of the blind the one eyed person is sovereign' - a politically correct version. Spent about 3 hours in the afternoon wandering around an old church and medieval castle. Bought myself a Raven. Googling information about Ravens. See photo at the end.
