Wow, what a weekend!

Thank you to everyone who came to our 60s, Soul and Motown night on Friday. The turnout was better than we ever imagined and it was amazing to see everyone on the dancefloor having a great time!

Lots of people asked when we would be doing it again so we'll definitely try and arrange another one. We have a few other events happening this year so keep and eye on our page. 👀

A big thank you to all the suppliers of our raffle prize donations too!

Our Branch has been out in the village this morning 'planting' some poppies for our VE day display.

Over 300 poppies have been hand painted by our Branch members Louise and Jan to mark VE day on Thursday 8th May.

You can see our poppies outside the St Peter's Rooms and near the War Memorial.

On Thursday, we'll be joining hundreds of other events across the nation by lighting a beacon to represent 'the light of peace' that emerged from the darkness of war.

The event will begin at 9pm with songs from Ruddington Community Choir and the beacon will be lit at 9:30pm.

"An outstanding performance which takes you on an emotional adventure as though you were right there in the cockpit with them..."

Last night, we had the pleasure of watching "The Spitfire Girls" which tells the truly amazing story of the women who joined the Air Transport Auxiliary. They became responsible for getting military aircraft across England, Scotland and Wales during WW2 for urgent repairs despite not having any weapons available to defend themselves if needed.

Their work was relentless and they were often seen reading the manuals on how to fly each plane as they were running to climb aboard. Being capable of flying 147 different aircraft was just one of the many skills required to make it in the ATA.

We'd like to thank the production team behind "The Spitfire Girls" who have also allowed the RBL to share our information within their programmes and even had one of our information tables available nearby.

We're saddened to hear of the passing of a Bletchley Park codebreaker Veteran Betty Webb on the 1st April 2025 at the age of 101.

Betty jointed the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1941 and later posted to Bletchley at the age of 18. When the war ended in Europe in May 1945, she went to work at the Pentagon after spending four years at Bletchley. In her later life, she became an advocate for the heritage of Bletchley Park and remained committed to telling the story of how their efforts helped win the war.

She was only declassified from telling her story in her 70s and went on to write her book "No More Secrets" which is still available today.

Today, the United Kingdom has lost its last Battle Of Britain Veteran.

John 'Paddy' Hemingway DFC

In his youth John travelled from Ireland to join the RAF and following the outbreak of WW2, was assigned to No. 85 Squadron in France where he is recorded as destroying two enemy aircraft during the Battle of France as well as flying Hurricanes supporting missions during the Battle of Dunkirk.

In Britain's hour of need John was there and in 1940 he fought in a dogfight over Dover which was watched by Winston Churchill. John was shot down four times and bailed out whilst over 8,000ft.

Regarded as "The few" by Churchill, the average age of a pilot in the battle was 19-20 and the average training time was just two weeks as there was so much demand for pilots.

At 105 years of age he lived a happy life talking of the war and enjoyed visited from RAF personnel over the years.

On behalf of the Royal British Legion, we reflect on John's life and his commitment to the Armed Forces.

Rest In Peace.

- A special thanks to The Lee Enfield Project for allowing us to use their content and photos of John. The project honours the last remaining WW2 Veterans and shares their stories. You can find them on Instagram by searching .

Keep an eye out for them in many of the shops and businesses in the village.

We had a lovely weekend speaking to lots of people about our Branch and inviting them to our 60s, Soul and Motown night.

We even managed to stop for lunch at Butler's Coffee House and fit in some cake from Jaspers Cafe. 🍰

Happy Birthday to us! 🎉🎂

It's our 90th Birthday today and we're so proud to have supported our local community over the last 90 years.

As a Branch of the Royal British Legion, our role is to provide Veterans and those currenting serving in the armed forces with access to vital support services.

We wouldn't be able to do any of this without our wonderful supporters. So a big thanks to all of you who have come to our events, donated to us and helped our Branch become what it is today.

Here's to the next 90 years! 🍾🥂
