CAST Angling Project CAST is an educational angling project established since 2003 working with schools across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with disengaged young people.

CAST deliver a range of Qualifications available which can be tailored for learners individual needs. The CAST Project uses angling as a means to inspire and motivate young people to develop an interest in learning. We encourage young people to recognise the merits of learning skills in order to achieve goals and understand the links between education and success. The project has an intrinsic comm

itment to developing the life skills, citizenship and social responsibility of its members. CAST provides a person-centred, supportive environment that encourages participants to take control of their lives and accept responsibility for their actions and decisions. Training and support takes place in small groups and on an individual basis in a way that promotes empowerment and personal responsibility. Accreditation and Progression
For many young people having their achievements recognised is an important and enriching process. CAST places this at the heart of its work and seeks to acknowledge achievements through nationally recognised qualifications. The CAST Personal Development course is a combination of Step-Up OCN’s delivered at both Entry & Level one, providing students an opportunity for progression and to accumulate credits for future education pathways.

Some of our CAST Post 16 Students, who are studying for a Land Based Diploma learnt about tree planting on Thursday, thanks to Peter Corringe and Nic from the Greenwood Community Forest. They planted Oak and Rowan trees at Haggnook in Newstead Abbey Park. Hopefully they can go back some day in many years to come and see their work as mature trees.

One of our major practical projects for the coming half term is laying the hedge on a historical meadow/roadway in Newstead Abbey Park. This will be carried out by staff and students and here are some photos of our training day with Bill Bailey, a local craftsman who lays hedges.

A great end to a fantastic year! 💪🙌👌

We've been busy helping a local fishery with creating a hardstanding path to enable vehicle access around the site and make angling more accessible.

Well done to all involved and the hard work you've displayed throughout this year! 🫡👏

Before, during and after 🌳

With the stormy conditions, snow and high winds over the weekend we had a number of trees fall on a stretch of the river we manage that were blocking access to the fishing platforms.

Fortunately the guys were on hand with a range of pruning gear to tackle the giant willow tree and open the swim back up.

Top work guys 👏💪🎣

We've had a busy week working along the river Derwent in Derby carrying out fishery management.

As part of the Maintaining Sports Fisheries BTEC unit, we have carried out pruning, step installation on steep banks and strimming. This not only gives our learners experience of using a range of different tools and equipment, but also make angling more accessible!

Top job guys 👏
