Nineteen members of West Bridgford u3a had a guided tour of the Masonic Hall on Goldsmith Street in Nottingham on May 12 2026.

The building was opened in July 1881, built in the Queen Anne architectural style. The premises were expanded and rebuilt in the 1920s, but heavily damaged in the 1941 blitz. The interior of the main hall received a direct hit and an air raid, but the classic façade was survived, although it had to be propped up for some time before it could be fully restored.

The building has two ornate Temples, used in Masonic meetings. These contain a lot of symbolism, including chequered floors and beautiful carpets. It also has a banqueting suite, and a restaurant that is open to the public.

As well as being told about the history of the Masons in Nottinghamshire, the guide explained some of the charity work carried out by the Masons. This includes providing teddy bears for those who have suffered trauma, through accidents or fires in their homes. Every ambulance in Nottingham carries these teddy bears to give out to those in need.

Another project the Lodge has is to provide ‘stab kits’ to be placed in every Defibrillator box in the city. This allows stab victims to be given immediate, and often life-saving, treatment at the scene. The Lodge has also provided free training for emergency service staff, showing them how to use the kits to give stab victims a better chance of surviving.

This week, a group went to see Barnum. Fourteen members enjoyed an afternoon at Nottingham Playhouse, seeing Lee Mead as ‘the greatest showman’. It was a fantastic show with great songs, acrobatics and even an elephant!

60s Group – The decade, not an age-qualification!

What a difference a new idea makes to our everyday life. No, not AI, but the new West Bridgford U3A 60s group has provided an opportunity to glean all sorts of unlikely bits of 'news'.

For example, have you ever heard of the FISHPOOL HOARD? No, well neither had I, but it is the name for the largest hoard of medieval gold coins ever found in Britain!
Where? Ravenshead, Notts
When? 1966
Worth? Well at the time of discovery the face value was about £400. Today’s equivalent – what do you think?

Do join me to find out more about this fascinating era. Were you there?

For u3a members - contact Sue Bailey at [email protected]
Starting 11th May at 2pm, then monthly.

If you’re not already a u3a member, please go to our website to join!
