Students from six special schools across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire recently took part in the Believe. Move. Achieve. event - and we're now able to share a new film showcasing the event.

The event was organised in partnership with the University of Nottingham and held at David Ross Sports Village.

Shaped by youth voice, it gave young people the chance to take part in a range of activities including boccia, sitting volleyball, archery and the climbing wall, and hear an inspirational speech from 2012 Paralympic medallist Mel Clarke.

We had a great day and it was lovely to see so many smiling faces!

It’s been wonderful to bring Derby and Nottingham’s schools together again today for the Girls Active Celebration Day.

Co-designed by the Girls Active Leaders, the day started with an inspirational speech from the amazing Sunshine Sam. More than 200 young people then took part in a choice of a wide range of activities including skateboarding, cheerleading, Kinball, street dance, indoor cycling, tennis, basketball and Drumba.

Active Notts and Active Derbyshire work in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust to deliver Girls Active at Djanogly City Academy, Park Vale Academy, Oakwood Academy, Nottingham Academy, Redhill Academy, Farnborough Academy and Bemrose School. Each school is supported by an ambassador.

The programme recognises the challenges girls experience to participation, and supports schools and empowers girls to make the necessary changes to PE and sport and physical activity provision to remove barriers and develop a relevant and vibrant offer to engage all girls, not just the sporty few.

The Girls Active Leaders have been working hard in their schools to support, influence and encourage their peers to be more active, and today was about celebrating their achievements so far and inspiring more girls to take part and try something new.

It’s great to read Sport England’s position statement on devolution. Here in Derbyshire and Notts, we have started to build some good relationships with the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), whose footprint matches our own.

Having had conversations with a number of the EMCCA team and with Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, we can see how our work in place aligns with their role around inclusive growth and addressing inequalities within our cities and counties. As Sport England have shared, we know the positive role being active can play on physical and mental health and our role is to see how this can play a part in developing truly inclusive growth. We’re already working closely with EMCCA and other partners around active travel too. We’ve been advocating the role of walking and how to understand barriers to people walking more from their door, to make local trips and to access public transport.

We look forward to bringing partners together, with communities to help create long term, sustainable growth for Derbyshire and Notts.

Today is a reminder that looking after our planet and looking after ourselves can go hand in hand.

It's also a chance to celebrate how nature inspires us to move more and live healthier lives. Whether it’s a walk in your local park, cycling to work, or simply spending more time outdoors. Finding an activity that works for you doesn’t just support your health, it supports the environment too.

Be more than a spectator: Be an active bystander.

Safe, inclusive communities don’t just happen, they’re built by the people within them.

It can be hard to know what to do when you witness discrimination, bullying, harassment, or other problematic behaviours.

But its only by taking action that we can help everyone feel safe.

Here are five options you could choose to take in the moment:

✔️Distract: Interrupt the situation by creating a diversion, such as asking for the time, to shift attention.

✔️Delegate: Seek help from someone else, like a coach or organiser who is better placed to step in.

✔️Delay: If you can't interrupt, delay your action until after and check in with the person affected to offer support and make sure they’re okay.

✔️Direct: Address the behaviour clearly and calmly if it’s safe to do so, letting the person know it’s not acceptable.

✔️Document: Record what happened, noting details like time, place, and what you saw, to support any follow-up action.
