Yesterday some of our class of 2026 trainees had a practice day. As well as tracking, we practiced proximity alerts - the ability to show us that a dog is close by without rushing over and flushing it out. All the dogs did fantastically and the humans weren’t bad either (although the humans found some of the ground more testing than the dogs did!). We still need to get better at taking photos too 🤦‍♀️

Thank you Howard Court Weddings for having us, we really appreciate it

Following on from yesterday’s post about photos, here’s a real life example. Douglas and Charlie are two of our trainee search dogs. Both are Black and Tan cocker spaniels. As you can see in the first picture they do look similar. The second picture includes both of them as well as two images taken from a quick internet search for a Black and Tan cocker - could you be sure which is which?

(To avoid doubt Douglas is bottom left with the lip curl, Charlie is top right showing no respect for the garden furniture; neither is currently missing!)

Most dog owners will have hundreds of photos of their dogs on their phone. Funny faces, sleeping beauties, crazy zoomies and everything in between.

If the worst happened and your dog went missing how many of those photos would actually help identify your particular dog? Could a member of the public see your dog’s missing poster and recognise that the dog in front of them is yours? Having to tell a search team “he looks like this but without the ginger on his eyebrow and his left hind leg is white not black like that” just leaves room for misidentification and confusion. We all know we can recognise our yellow lab from other yellow labs but can anyone else?

We strongly recommend that you keep a clear picture of your dog’s face, a side view and a picture of any distinctive markings (eg a white blaze or a nicked ear). If your long haired dog is clipped then a picture after grooming is also helpful.

Here are some pictures from our own galleries. While cute, they would not be making it into missing posters!!

*Call for stall holders*

Keeping our search dogs in tip top condition is critical for us. Everything from grooming to physio and hydrotherapy keeps them fit and well and able to perform when we need them to step up and find someone’s precious pet.

At our Dog Day on 6th September we will be having a doggy wellness area and we are looking for additional stalls for this area. If you or someone you know has a business connected to dog wellness then please get in touch.

Pictured are two of our experienced search dogs, Gilbert and Eva, showing their different ideas of what pampering they appreciate

The last two days have seen our class of 2026 reunited for level 2 of their training. The hot weather wasn’t particularly welcome as it made tracking much harder for the dogs. Day 1 was spent tracking in an urban environment, a new experience for several of the dogs. Day 2 was the complete opposite, a lovely rural environment with lots of different areas in the shadow of the famous white horse.

All the teams worked really hard. For the dogs it was about following the scent and solving puzzles to figure out where the track went. For the handlers it was about learning to read the dog’s body language and to trust their noses. The handlers also learnt that mud can be a hazard to both cars and people, teamwork, sticks and a crowbar can free a trapped vehicle and we all need to take more pictures of the actual tracking!

Now it’s time for practice, practice and practice before the final level of training in a few months, exciting times!

We’ll be holding a fun dog show at our Dog Day and it got us thinking. What category would your dog be guaranteed to win? Here’s a couple of ours, let us know in the comments what award winners you have!

And why not come along on 6th September to see if any of your categories make it into the show?!

As we gear up for our big Dog Day fundraiser our plans for the various activities and areas of the event are firming up and we’ll be sharing more of these over the next few weeks.

First up in the activity area is the Gundog Scurry. This was a really popular event last year with all sorts of breeds taking the opportunity to test their speed over the obstacles. We are delighted to welcome back Caroline and her team from Cast dog Training Leeming for this - can your dog be top of the table this year?

Date: 6th September
Place: Himalayan Gardens, Grewelthorpe
