Why Using Artefacts in RE Deepens Learning - How hands-on objects boost stimulation, engagement, and retention
Religious Education is a subject rich in meaning, symbolism, and lived experience. Yet, for many pupils, religious beliefs and practices can feel distant, abstract, or difficult to visualise. One of the most effective ways to bridge this gap is through the use of artefacts — physical objects connected to religious traditions, practices, and everyday life of faith.
Research and classroom evidence consistently show that hands-on, artefact-based learning significantly improves stimulation, engagement, and retention, particularly when compared to lesson formats that rely mainly on talk or slides. In RE, artefacts are not an “extra”; they are a powerful learning tool.
