Why Using Artefacts in RE Deepens Learning - How hands-on objects boost stimulation, engagement, and retention

Religious Education is a subject rich in meaning, symbolism, and lived experience. Yet, for many pupils, religious beliefs and practices can feel distant, abstract, or difficult to visualise. One of the most effective ways to bridge this gap is through the use of artefacts — physical objects connected to religious traditions, practices, and everyday life of faith.

Research and classroom evidence consistently show that hands-on, artefact-based learning significantly improves stimulation, engagement, and retention, particularly when compared to lesson formats that rely mainly on talk or slides. In RE, artefacts are not an “extra”; they are a powerful learning tool.

NEW Story Bag - The Fox and the Stork!

Bring this classic fable to life with our Fox and the Stork Story Bag! Based on the traditional tale, this engaging resource explores fairness, empathy and treating others with kindness. From a Humanist perspective, it helps children reflect on how our actions affect others and why mutual respect matters.

Packed with tactile props, the story bag encourages children to act out the story themselves, making learning interactive, memorable and fun. Ideal for group use, it supports discussion, participation and the development of positive social behaviour.

This story bag is FREE to borrow by RRC members and bookable in advance!

Buddha’s Birthday celebration at the Oriental Museum on Sunday 24 May, 12-3pm.

Also known as Vesak, Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated around the world and commemorates the birth of Buddha in around 563 BCE. Born a prince, Buddha went on to renounce his privileged royal life and become a holy man, ultimately reaching Enlightenment.

There will be lots of activities including yoga, art activities, storytelling sessions, and a gallery trail. Members of the local Buddhist community will offer a guided meditation and a talk on Buddhism.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to pour flower-scented water over a statue of the infant Buddha, symbolising the cleansing of body, speech and thoughts.

This event is family-friendly and suitable for anyone who is curious about Buddhism, or just wants to try something new.

There is no need to book, just drop in anytime between 12 – 3pm. The event is free of charge.

NEW Starfish Story Bag

This Humanist resource bag is based on the well known story of a child who rescues starfish stranded on a beach. Through storytelling and hands on interaction, children discover how small acts of kindness can make a real difference.

The bag includes objects that allow children to act out the story themselves, taking turns to “save” the starfish and explore the message in a practical, memorable way. It is ideal for group use, encouraging participation, empathy and discussion about compassion, helping others and making positive choices, even when our actions seem small.
