It was a sunglasses and snuggly coats kind of day earlier this week when we welcomed P.R.O.P.S North East to the hall to plant a new sycamore tree. Rooted in partnership, PROPS were invited to plant a sapling grown from seeds gathered from the felled Sycamore Gap tree on the north front, close to where one of the oldest trees on site was lost during Storm Arwen in 2021. The group planted the tree before heading into the hall to view Shona Branigan’s Heartwood exhibition, which you can see here at the hall until 3 May.

PROPS North East works to improve the lives of friends and families affected by alcohol and drug use, offering practical help and emotional support and tailoring their approach to every individual, ensuring that every family receives the care that best meets their needs. One of our community partners, PROPS North East has been visiting with some of their families for the last couple of years, taking time to be together in nature and enjoying the changing seasons in the gardens. The group is looking forward to watching this tree take root and grow.

That’s why the Elements Training Portal was created. Short, practical online courses you can complete whenever it suits you — at no cost.

Together, as a city, we are making a difference for people affected by drug and alcohol use – and for the families and carers around them.
The Substance, Health Investment for Transformation (SHIFT) celebration at the Hancock Museum was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the dedication, innovation and resilience across Newcastle’s drug and alcohol sector.

PROPS was proud to stand alongside partners including Newcastle City Council, OHID, Social Inclusion Through Sport, Newcastle Treatment and Recovery, Clean Slate, Northumbria Police, Road to Recovery Trust and Patchwork, all working to improve recovery, family support and community wellbeing.

Huge thanks and congratulations to everyone involved – partnership like this is how change is sustained. 🩵
