Al-Falaq Counselling CIC attended this important community conversation led by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, focusing on the safety of women and girls when using public transport across our region.

This initiative recognises that transport affects women and girls differently. Concerns such as feeling unsafe at bus stops, travelling alone or after dark, unreliable services, and the challenges of balancing work, education and caring responsibilities can have a significant impact on daily life and wellbeing.

The Mayor’s work aims to listen to the lived experiences of women and girls and use these voices to shape safer, more reliable and accessible transport services across the North East. Discussions included improving safety around bus stops and stations, addressing experiences of harassment, creating better transport connections, and exploring plans for bus reform through the Angel Network.

Why is this important? When women feel safe and confident travelling within their communities, they are better able to access employment, education, healthcare, social opportunities and support services. Public transport should work for everyone, and women’s experiences must be at the heart of future planning and decision-making.

At Al-Falaq Counselling, we welcome initiatives that promote inclusion, safety and community engagement. We encourage women and girls to share their experiences and contribute to conversations that help create positive change.
Together, we can help build communities where women and girls feel safe, heard and empowered.
