Motion 5 Pay in Schools

Schools are losing experienced staff and finding it difficult to recruit.

Support staff are being asked to do so much more, working with children with advanced medical needs and ever increasing challenging behaviours.

They deserve real recognition for the important role they hold. Their roles are simply unrecognised to what they were 10 years ago. They are poorly paid, term time worked who are highly skilled yet under paid and under valued.

Day two.

Usual start of the day with standing orders and the Local Government Service Group Annual Report, which this year was heavily focused on schools .

We were told we can fight and organise as hard as we are able, but without the membership on board it will be fruitless. We must aim to have a UNISON steward in every school, if we are ever to get real results for our School Support Staff.

More than nine in ten council workers in Scotland say they are struggling with the cost of living.

UNISON Scotland surveyed more than 6,000 local government workers. The findings are stark:

94% are finding it difficult to keep up with rising household costs
39% are paid less than £15 an hour
30% earn less than £20,000 a year
12% have taken on a second job

Council staff keep vital services running every day. They deserve fair pay.

COSLA committed two years ago to working towards a minimum rate of £15 an hour. Workers cannot wait any longer.

Kaymarie and Alastair are there representing your branch. Conference is where we set the agenda for the coming year. It’s our decision making process where branch delegates submit motions on behalf of their members. Branches then vote on these motions and any that are carried are then put into practice the following year.

Welcome to delegates at our Local Government Service Group Conference in Brighton! 💜

Here we are at Local Government Conference in Brighton where Motion 24 Violence at Work empowering LG workers to speak up is being heard.
Concern of widely underreporting of violence at work. Being in a position of care for another does not mean it’s your job to be verbally and physically abused. Yet these workers are expected to grin and bear it with the added insult of being amongst the lowest paid despite the daily assaults. We heard from carers and Edinburgh city branch spoke to the motion regarding the impact on school staff.
