Some ponies write their story across generations 🐴
Blue first came to the Sanctuary as a tiny six-month-old Dartmoor foal. More than two decades later, at 28 years old, he’s still bringing joy to the people around him. For the last 23 years, Blue has been cared for by Sanctuary at Home carer and vet nurse Karyn, who first met him while working at the Sanctuary.
Since then, he’s become part of the family in every sense of the word. 'He’s been part of our family for decades, my nieces, my nephews, and now even the next generation have all learned to ride on him. He’s gone full circle.'
Over the years, Blue has faced severe allergies, laminitis, EMS, Cushing’s and ongoing dental issues but thanks to careful lifelong management, he continues to enjoy life as a much-loved companion pony.
Karyn shared: 'I’ve managed everything he’s faced, the allergies, the laminitis managed everything he’s faced and none of it worries me. As long as you manage it properly, he can still live a happy life.'
Blue’s story is also woven with memories of Rosemary Kind, whose compassion shaped so much of the Sanctuary’s early work. 'Rosemary was amazing, she created this family atmosphere on the yard. She’d cook Sunday roast for everyone, and nothing fazed her, not even foals and lambs running through the house.'
Known for rescuing vulnerable ponies and caring for orphan foals, Rosemary created an environment built on kindness, calm, and community, values that still live on through ponies like Blue today
By becoming a Sanctuary at Home carer, people like Karyn help give rescued horses and ponies lifelong love and stability, while freeing up vital space at the Sanctuary for more equines in need.
Could you offer a pony a sanctuary at home? 🧡
