Please take time to have a little read and complete the jotterform. (Being mindful this is very much in the exploration stages!)
Let’s find out about the plans/ interest behind “YAWN”
Hi everyone, my name is Rory Casey. I’m a 22-year-old Registered Nurse with 7/8 years experience volunteering with organisations such as Down Right Brilliant and Rise and Shine Group 67, supporting children and young adults with additional needs.
I’m currently exploring the idea of starting a social group called YAWN (Young Adults With Needs) Social Club for young adults aged 18–30 with additional needs, including physical, visual, learning and social needs.
I feel there aren’t enough opportunities locally in Newry for young adults with additional needs once school finishes, and I’d love to create a safe, social space where friendships, confidence and new skills can grow.
The idea would be an 8-week block running one evening a week (likely Tuesday or Thursday) for 2–3 hours in a local community centre, hopefully starting around July/August. Each week would have a different theme or activity such as cooking, sports, art, reading/writing, and possibly short accredited courses like road or fire safety.
Initially, I’d hope to start with around 10–15 young adults as a trial run, with the aim of growing it further if there’s enough interest and it proves manageable.
The group would require volunteers, fundraising support and possibly a small membership fee, so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, is this something your young adult would enjoy? I’m also open to any suggestions for activities or ideas you’d like to see included.
Thanks Rory!
