WORLD OCEAN DAY 2022 🌊

Come join us this Wednesday at 9am for a beach clean up and swim at Towan beach in Newquay to celebrate World Ocean Day! 🤗

We know a healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crises. 🌍

By tracking plastics and what we find on our clean ups we hope to use data to influence decision makers.🔬

And this year we are calling on world leaders to protect at least 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030.

So, will you join us and the lovely folk at for a Dip&Clean this Wednesday morning?

There’s no place like home. And in celebration of our beloved planet and Global Earth Day this Friday April 22, 2022, we invite you to join us for a cleanup followed by a swim at Whipsiderry Pools.

Why are we doing this? Well we as residents can help protect our planet, animals, other life and ourselves living within it.

We will be providing all cleanup equipment. Can’t wait to soak up those mermaid vibes in the most amazing pools - low tide means we should have the best time.

🦠 MICROPLASTICS 🥤

For the first time ever, microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood, with scientists finding the tiny particles in almost 80% of the people tested.

The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may lodge in organs. What of the future babies we will grow inside of us.. born plastic babies?

The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year.’

😔 Biggest category of items we collect on beach cleans is still plastic pieces, including cable ties, cellophane etc

🦀 We also found a lot of pot rubber for crab/ lobster fishing! (Swipe to see 👉)

Marine fishing is a really important part of the U.K. economy, but we must find more eco friendly pots! 🦞

Our latest campaign is around cigarette waste management.

What many people don’t realise is that cigarette butts are one of the biggest plastic polluters in the world🤯 🌍

Cigarette butts are not biodegradeable - when they're flicked on the ground they don't break down and end up being washed out to sea.

Mismanaged plastic leaks into our ocean, disturbing delicate marine ecosystems with over 1️⃣1️⃣ million tons of plastic entering marine waters each year. 🌊

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK
On Sunday, we paddled out with our close community here and 33 others in support of , brilliant charity that raise mental health awareness and in particular inclusivity around the community.
We went round the group to voice one word that was on our hearts now that we had formed the circle in the water.
“Happy/ Elated/ Blessed/ Emotional/ With my Community….” and the list goes on.

Mounting Research Shows Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Surfing on Mental Health.

While it's easy to find people who are able to talk about the transformational impact surf therapy has had on their lives, these positive effects are increasingly backed up by research.

Several studies now show the beneficial, tangible impact of surf therapy on mental and emotional health.

Independent research commissioned by The Wave Project - the surf therapy charity founded by Joe Taylor for children and young people based in the UK - revealed a statistically significant change for the better to the well-being of participants after their intervention.

Dip&Clean have allowed us to build a solid community down here, who care about the ocean and give back.

Going live in 20 mins, today we have the opportunity to request our Cornish MPs to support the motion for a Carbon Tax. You can follow the event live, and here is our plea:

“To our Newquay Council, thank you for the opportunity to use my voice for change today in regards to the Carbon Tax Motion.

My name is Grace Smith
On the 23rd Sept, I attended Newquay Bundle Environment & Facilities Committee, where I petitioned for our local MPs to support the Carbon Tax motion. As we all know, Cornwall council has voiced an official statement that they will use their voice. Other Local towns have voiced their support for this motion, Truro, being one example of many. It would therefore be of interest for Newquay to follow suit, as the process is extremely straightforward and hassle-free.

Our Newquay mayor himself has pledged to use his voice as a precedent to flight climate change. His social media page endorses posts related to climate change mitigation, how to prepare/ prevent storm surges, coastal erosion etc, his tree planting scheme being one great example, or even the adopt a street Land and Sea Cornwall initiative.

Therefore as a Newquay resident, I want to ask whether you realise the impact Climate change is and will continue having on Newquay Tourism and Fishing sectors.

In the Newquay Neighbourhood Plan consultation and household survey of 2016, residents expressed concern about escalation of flood/ drainage issues. Flooding across the U.K. and globally will only worsen unless our government inspire others to join us in reducing emissions to get climate change under 1.5 degrees Celsius.

According to the 2020 National Trust Tourism Report, peak visitor season is already shifting from high summer to autumn as temperatures rise, due to extreme outdoor heat.

As a Newquay resident, I am worried about the dwindling of fisheries due to heating of waters and extreme weather, I am worried about the pollution in our waters, and the increase of sewage in bays because of storm surges, I am worried about the lack of government support to small local businesses and would like to see more done locally to mitigate climate change. Marine wildlife is suffering, dunes and coastlines are collapsing at an alarming rate.

I would ask that today our Newquay Council to support the Carbon Tax motion. As many other Councils are raising their voice, Truro being the example stated previously, why not Newquay, and especially as the Mayor backed a call to the G7 to take action on Climate Change?
I would ask that you support the motion, and if not, why so?”

Newquay Town Council’s Full Council meeting will take place at 7pm in the Council Chamber. This meeting will be live streamed on our page.

‘Full Council’ is the term given to the Council as the Corporate Body and is made up of all 20 Councillors. The Council delegates its functions to 4 Sub-Committees: Governance & Resources, Environment & Facilities, Community & Tourism and Planning & Licensing.

Full Council meets once a month to discuss and debate matters arising from the Sub-Committees. Whilst a lot of decision making is delegated to sub-committees, Full Council is still primarily responsible for the more important, key decisions which would affect the Town as a whole.
