Today we were asked to assist in search that wasn't on social media. This isn't uncommon but today we particularly would like to congratulate Max with his handler Ali.
Since passing all their qualifications to become a search dog team which takes a huge amount of time and dedication this was their first live search.
Fantastic teamwork by the Drone team, Dog search team and ground support.
Once arrived on site Max took us straight to the area the dog was lost in. The lost dog was found and secured within an hour and a half.
Fantastic result .
Photo of gorgeous and clever Max 🤩

🐾 PLEASE REMEMBER… WE DON’T JUST HELP FIND DOGS 🚁🐾

Although we’re called Drone SAR For Lost Dogs IOW, we actually help search for all sorts of missing animals across the Island 💛

Over the years we’ve assisted in locating:

🐴 A missing pony
🐄 A calf
🦅 A Harris Hawk
🐢 A tortoise
🦝 Raccoons
🐶 Countless missing dogs

… and many more!

Using thermal drones, experienced pilots, search teams and local knowledge, we’ll always do our best to help where we can.

So if you’re part of the farming, equestrian or animal community on the Isle of Wight, please remember us if an animal goes missing. Sometimes a drone in the sky can spot what can’t easily be seen from the ground 👀🚁

A huge thank you as always to our amazing supporters, volunteers and sponsors who help make this completely FREE islandwide service possible 💛

🥹🐾 WOW… WE’RE ABSOLUTELY SPEECHLESS 🐾🥹

We honestly can’t quite believe we’re writing this… but Drone SAR For Lost Dogs IOW have been gifted yet ANOTHER drone! 🚁💛

A huge, heartfelt thank you to the incredibly kind and generous Ted Burden, who has donated a brand new DJI M4T thermal drone to the team.

This amazing piece of equipment will help us continue searching for and locating missing dogs across the Island — especially in difficult terrain and darkness. Every single drone we have makes a massive difference and genuinely helps save lives.

In a truly touching tribute, this drone will be named “Jess”, in memory of the very first rescue dog Ted found on the Island… who then went on to find her happy ever after home with Ted himself 🐶💛

Thank you Ted… not just for the drone itself, but for believing in what we do and helping us continue bringing lost dogs home to their families.

Jess will now become part of the Drone SAR family and will help countless dogs find their way home 🐾🚁

From all of us at Drone SAR For Lost Dogs IOW… THANK YOU 💛

🚁🐾 HOW DRONES HELP FIND LOST DOGS — AND WHY THEY’RE SAFELY USED BY TRAINED TEAMS 🐾🚁

When a dog goes missing, the whole community often comes together to help. One of the most effective modern tools in these searches is the drone — but many people don’t know what they actually do, or why they’re used.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help everyone understand how drones fit into a safe, coordinated search.

🌤️ WHAT DRONES DO IN A LOST DOG SEARCH
Drones give trained pilots and search teams a view that simply isn’t possible from the ground. There are two main types:
🔥 Thermal drones
These detect heat signatures, which makes them incredibly useful for:
✅Spotting dogs curled up or hiding
✅Searching fields, wood edges, and long grass
✅Locating a dog at night or in low visibility
✅Checking large rural areas without disturbing the dog
📸 Standard camera drones
These provide high‑quality images and video from above, ideal for:
✅Scanning big areas quickly
✅Checking places too dangerous for people
✅Confirming sightings
✅Searching safely around roads, railways, and rivers

💛 WHY DRONES ARE SO VALUABLE
Drones shine in places where it’s unsafe or impossible for people to search:
🚆 Railway lines
✅Long distances can be checked without anyone stepping onto the tracks
✅Helps confirm sightings so the rail network can be alerted if needed
✅Reduces the risk to both people and dogs
🛣️ Busy roads
✅Drones can examine verges, embankments, and central reservations
✅No need for people to stand near fast traffic
✅Allows safe searching without causing further risk
⛰️ Cliffs, bogs, riversides, and other dangerous terrain
✅Drones reach areas humans can’t
✅Helps identify the dog’s movements while keeping everyone safe
🌍 Covering huge areas quickly
In minutes, a drone can scan what might take people hours.

⚠️ WHERE DRONES HAVE LIMITATIONS
It’s important to know that drones are not a miracle solution:
🌲 Dense trees and heavy cover
❌Leaves and branches block visibility
❌Even thermal cameras struggle under thick canopy
🌧️ Bad weather
❌Strong wind, rain, fog, and cold affect flight time and visibility
❌Drones can’t fly in unsafe conditions
🐶 Skittish or frightened dogs
❌Drones must never fly close or overhead
❌They can help locate a dog — but not catch it
This is why drones work best as part of a full team, not on their own.

🤝 WHY TEAMWORK MATTERS
Drones are most effective when they work alongside:
🐾 Experienced ground teams
These teams check areas the drone can’t reach, look for tracks or signs, and respond to drone sightings calmly and safely.
🐾 Lost dog tracking specialists
Trackers understand behaviour patterns, scent trails, and likely movement routes.
They guide drone pilots to the right places rather than random searching.
🐾 The public
Local sightings, reports, and updates help teams narrow down search zones — as long as no one chases or calls the dog.
When drone pilots, ground searchers, trackers, and the community all work together, dogs have the best possible chance of coming home.

🐶💛 THE GOAL IS ALWAYS SAFETY
Trained drone pilots always put the dog’s welfare first:
❌No chasing or flying low
❌No scaring the dog
❌No flying near livestock or wildlife
❌Respecting legal flight rules and safety boundaries
A drone is simply a tool — but in experienced hands, it can be life‑saving.
Please share to help raise awareness — you never know which missing dog this knowledge could help. 💛🐾
