Disappointing day for Newport in the Fife Cup. Despite competing during phases of the game, some poor decision making and discipline contributed to the concession of three penalties and one red card. In the end, Lochgelly would deservedly win the tie.

We are delighted to
welcome Sol Campbell back to the club.

After a spell working up north and then playing for Letham since August the prolific goalscorer adds even more quality to the current squad.

🏆 SCOTTISH CUP — SECOND ROUND

Newport welcomed Methilhill to The Crook this afternoon for a Scottish Cup second-round tie, with the home side eventually coming out on top in a thrilling 3–2 contest.
Newport started brightly and opened the scoring after 13 minutes. Sy Coventry delivered a dangerous cross and Connor Anderson forced a good save from the Methilhill keeper, but Craig Kemlo was quickest to react, finishing the rebound to put Newport ahead. ⚽️

The visitors responded shortly afterwards. A set piece was delivered into the Newport box, headed down and eventually bundled over the line to bring Methilhill level.

Newport regained the lead before half-time when Harry Urban was played through on goal and calmly finished to make it 2–1. ⚽️
However, Methilhill struck again just before the break. A miskick from Leighton Quinn in the Newport goal fell kindly to the visitors, who made no mistake with the finish to send the teams into half-time level at 2–2.

Newport came out strongly in the second half and began to play some excellent football. Their pressure eventually paid off when substitute Luke O’Brien produced a brilliant diagonal ball to pick out Owen Phillips, who kept his composure to finish superbly and restore Newport’s lead. ⚽️

There was further drama when Sy Coventry knocked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper and appeared to be brought down by the defender inside the box. Despite strong appeals from the Newport players and supporters, no penalty was awarded.

That decision ensured a nervy finish, but
Leighton Quinn more than made up for his earlier error with a couple of massive saves late on to preserve Newport’s advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a 3–2 victory, sending Newport into the hat for the Scottish Cup third-round draw. 🔵⚽️

⭐ PLAYER OF THE MATCH — Matthew McDougall
90 minutes of sheer grit, determination and skill. McDougall was a constant thorn in the Methilhill side, as reflected by the fact he was fouled more than anyone else on the pitch. A superb battling performance from start to finish. 👏
