STOCK UP ON YOUR READING FOR SEPTEMBER!

In case you didn't know, the library will be closed for our glow up from 1.00pm Thursday 3rd September, and won't be open again until 30th September, so come along beforehand and stock up on books - whether buying for 50p a go (a bargain!) or borrowing for free (an even bigger bargain!).

Our annual fundraising night is on the horizon! This year it's Quiz Night.

Date: Saturday 3rd October 2026

Venue: The Glebe Sports & Social Club,

Tickets: £2.00

Come and join us for a lively and fun-packed evening. Our now-traditional annual fund raiser has proved to be a popular event, so don't miss out.

Tickets are available in the library, just ask at the desk. If you can't make it to the library, you can buy a ticket at the door on the night.

Learn About our Local Birds

Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th, Thursday 6th, Friday 7th August - 11am - 3pm

Starting on Monday 3rd August, a family friendly creative drop-in event in which families can take part in making a bird inspired collaborative exhibition, and to learn about the local bird species. Inspired by our Tyne Bridge kittiwakes.

Led by Nela, from Northumbria University, here's a chance to create and display bird pictures in our Library Lounge.

Suitable for all ages - children must be accompanied by adults.

YOUR LIBRARY IS GOING TO GET EVEN BETTER

Earlier this year Whickham Volunteer Library applied through Gateshead Council for funding from the "Pride in Place" Programme, a government-backed scheme to help residents improve their neighbourhoods.

To our delight we were successful, and are using the funding to transform the main library to make it more adaptable for community use.

The overall aim is to produce a space that will be suitable for library use (as books are our main purpose) but also allow the building to be suitable for other community uses, e.g. meetings, library fairs, and entertainment.

The upgrades will be taking place in September, and so the library will close on at 1.00pm on Thursday 3rd September, with a planned reopening at 9am on Wednesday 30th September.

If you would like any more information, please pop into the library - we have the project plans on display outside and inside the library. Ask a volunteer for more information.

We are excited about our project, and very much looking forward to welcoming you to your new library space.

Just Started! Our new Dungeons and Dragons group. First session went brilliantly, but we have room for more adventurers.

Monday evenings, 4.30pm till 6.30pm, for ages 12 - 18, at Whickham Library. All skills levels welcome.

This week is National Volunteers' Week. It's an opportunity to say thank you to the dedicated band of volunteers that we have at Whickham Volunteer Library. For nine years they've worked to make sure that we keep open our excellent library, in the centre of our village, to ensure it's a warm and welcoming space, and to keep growing what the library offers to our community.

Thank you to all of them!

In what they've described as "blistering" heat our intrepid walkers are well on their way on the Abbeys Way walk.

They're trekking over 100km in beautiful Scottish scenery, and sent a few pics for us to admire. We certainly admire their fortitude.

STARTING TUESDAY!

Two of our library volunteers, George and Alan, are undertaking the Borders Abbeys Way trek, over 100Km of wonderful Scottish countryside, starting on 26th May, and walking for six days.

They've generously agreed to being sponsored on behalf of Whickham Volunteer Library. Here we have two hardy chaps literally prepared to go the extra mile to raise funds. Please support them.
