Light Blues – we need your voice.

We’re asking Light Blue members across the Province to take a few minutes to complete a short survey to help shape what Northumberland Light Blues focuses on next.

So far, response levels are lower than we’d hoped, and without a wider range of voices it’s hard to be confident we’re reflecting what Light Blues actually want and need.

If you’re a Light Blue and haven’t yet responded, please take a moment to do so before 13 February. And if you’re able, please share this with other brethren in your lodge.

🕔 Takes around 5 minutes
📅 Closes 13 February

There’s an interesting idea in psychology that’s been getting more attention recently. When people feel genuinely listened to, something shifts. They relax. They open up. They reflect more deeply. A sense of connection forms quickly, sometimes even between people who barely know each other.

Psychologists call this feeling k**a muta. It sounds technical, but it simply describes that warm, moved sense of closeness and belonging we sometimes feel in moments of real human connection. Not romance. Not sentimentality. Just feeling seen, accepted, and understood.

For Freemasonry, this shouldn’t feel like a new concept.

At its best, so much of what makes the Craft meaningful happens outside the formalities. Conversations after meetings. Lifts home. Walks, meals, check-ins that start casually and become something more honest. Moments where someone feels safe enough to say what’s actually on their mind.

What’s striking is that k**a muta isn’t one-sided. The person being listened to feels it, but so does the listener. Connection works both ways. Presence works both ways.

That matters for groups like NLB.

We sit in a space where many members are juggling work, family, mental load, and the general pressure of modern life. When Freemasonry becomes a place where people feel genuinely heard, not judged, not corrected, not rushed, it becomes more than a meeting night. It becomes a source of grounding and connection.

And often, that doesn’t require more events, more structure, or more initiatives. Sometimes it just requires better conversations. Fewer distractions. More curiosity. A culture where listening is not just polite, but intentional.

This is why the current NLB survey matters.

It isn’t about ticking boxes or producing a report that disappears into a folder. It’s an attempt to listen better. To understand what people actually experience, what helps them feel connected, what puts them off, and where NLB can genuinely add value.

If listening really does build connection, then this is part of the work.

Taking a few minutes to complete the survey is a small but meaningful way to contribute to that culture. Not just by answering the questions, but by trusting that your perspective matters and will be taken seriously.

Freemasonry is built on shared values. It thrives on shared understanding. Listening is how we get there.

If you haven’t already, please take a moment to complete the survey. It really does help shape what NLB becomes next.

The survey is on the first page of our website.

3/8

Why younger members experience the Craft differently

Today’s Light Blues are balancing a lot:

• Shared childcare and domestic responsibilities
• Higher work pressures
• Rising costs and longer commutes
• Less appetite for rigid hierarchy
• More competition for limited free time

None of this means younger Masons care less.

It means they’re balancing more.

We want to understand that reality, not make assumptions.

2/8

The world many senior brethren joined...

Many older members joined the Craft at a time when:

• Evenings were more available
• Family roles were very different
• Regular attendance was easier to sustain
• Hierarchy was more widely accepted
• Economic stability gave men time to commit deeply

That world shaped how Freemasonry worked - and it worked well then.

But expectations formed in that era don’t always translate cleanly into modern life.

👉 Share how Freemasonry fits into your world today via the survey on the NLB website.

The Light Blues Went North… and Lived to Tell the Tale 🇬🇧🏴

What started as a curry-night conversation turned into a full-blown cross-border adventure.

After a very warm invitation from the brethren of Lodge St John No. 280, Coldstream, a solid contingent of Northumberland Light Blues headed over the border on Tuesday night to join them for their Regular Meeting.

From the moment we arrived, the welcome was first-class. The meeting itself gave us plenty to enjoy, including:

- A proper Scottish welcome to visiting brethren
- The presentation of Honorary Membership to Bro Andrew Elliot Forsyth, Immediate Past Provincial Grand Master of the Scottish Borders
- A cracking Emulation of the Second Degree, delivered in fine style

And then there was the rest of the evening… excellent company, great conversation, and a raffle of frankly heroic proportions. We’re still not entirely sure where they keep all those prizes, but we’re confident at least one sideboard in Coldstream is now looking suspiciously empty.

Huge thanks to the brethren of Lodge St John 280 for their hospitality, friendship, and top-tier banter. Even better, we’re fairly sure no diplomatic incidents were caused.

This is exactly what the Light Blues are about: getting out, meeting new brethren, and enjoying Freemasonry beyond our own four walls.

Northumberland represented well. Scotland set the bar high. Return visit strongly hinted at.
