The Worshipful Master would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support throughout 2025 and wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2026.

2025 was a challenging year for Lodge Temperance 2557 but with the hard work of our members and visitors we made it, finishing off the year with a fabulous festive meal, entertainment from the lovely Beth, dancing and a raffle which raised £158 for local charities.

We are now looking forward to 2026 with candidates for initiation, 2nd and 3rd degrees. Come along and support the Lodge. You can find our meeting dates for 2026 on our website.

Lodge Temperance meets on the Third Tuesday of the month six times per year during the months of January, February, April, June, October and December as follows:

The Worshipful Master, officers and brethren of Lodge Temperance 2557 wish our visitors, families and friends a very Merry Christmas.
May this Christmas be filled with happiness in all that you do, and may this joy continue the whole year through.

An excellent evening was had by all at the Lodge Temperance 2557 festive meal that followed our regular meeting on 16th December.

Flu and sickness depleted attendance but, for those that were able to join us, it was a great evening. Dorothy, the caterer, served an excellent three course traditional Christmas meal - vegetable soup, turkey with all the trimmings and christmas pudding with ice cream.

Several wore their dancing shoes and danced to the fantastic vocalist Beth Clarke after the meal and the evening finished with a raffle that raised £158 for local charites.

Our new Worshipful Master Wbro Simon commented :-

"Thank you all, your friends and families for attending this evening. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night with delicious food and special company accompanied by the fabulous Beth Clarke who provided the music. Merry Christmas to you all and thank you for all of your support. WM"

Sergeant Alan Blacklock Lattimer

Alan Blacklock Lattimer was a Freemason and member of Lodge Temperance 2557 who served in the 2nd World War and sadly made the ultimate sacrifice being killed in action on 16th November 1940.

On the 16th November 1940 the Vickers Wellington IC No. R3179 with 6 crew, including Bro Alan, took off on a day raid from Luqa, Malta, for a mission to Durazzo, Alblania and was shot down near Shavnik, Montenegro with the loss of all on board.

They were buried in a communal grave at Piroski Monastery but after the war re-interred in Belgrade War Cemetery.

We have prepared a short biography in his honour which you can read here:

Alan Blacklock Lattimer was a Freemason and member of Lodge Temperance 2557 who served in the 2nd World War. A letter to the Provincial Grand Secretary of Northumberland from WBro John Sowerby, Secretary, and dated 7th November 1947 attached a list of the names and service of forty three Brethren an...

As the weather turns chilly and the nights draw in, tis very much the season for all things festive. From shopping and Christmas markets to super fun get-togethers and our festive celebration and meal on Tuesday 16th December starting at 7.30.

This follows our December meeting on Tuesday 16th at 7.00 in Byker Freemasons Centre where we’ll open and close before the festivities begin.

What better way to celebrate the run up to Christmas than to enjoy a festive meal, great entertainment and of course excellent company.

There will be a three course traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, live entertainment from the singer Beth Clarke, dancing and a raffle to round off the evening (raffle prizes most welcome).

All members, their Ladies, family, friends, potential Freemasons and visitors are invited to join us for this festive party. The bar will be open from 6:00 so guests can get into a festive mood to dine at 7:30. Dress is smart casual (Christmas jumpers optional!) and the price is only £20 per person for a fabulous meal and evening.

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of our esteemed Brother Wbro Terry Keddy suddenly in hospital on Wednesday 5th November, aged 81 years.

Terry was a member of Legion Lodge 8634 from 1986 until it surrendered its warrant and was a joining member of Lodge Temperance 2557.

After four years on the Steward’s list at Legion Lodge he progressed through to the chair in 1995 then again in 2002 taking all offices in an exemplary manner. His attendance was always excellent.

His strength was as Legion’s Almoner, a position he held for over ten years. As an Almoner he was unsurpassed, not only in the manner in which he comforted those who were ill but also in the way he dealt with brethren who could be-in difficult circumstances. His tact and sympathy in these situations was his great strength and he was held in high esteem by all lodge members

Bro Keddy had a strong sense of “belonging”, this being nurtured by his time in HM Forces with the 15th /19th The King’s Royal Hussars, his almoner’s reports were well renowned and he kept track of all brethren. Woe betide anyone who did not inform him of illness or problems within the family. He took time to process any claim and many brethren of Legion Lodge had cause to be grateful to him. The fact that he had been almoner for such a long time is a testament to his ability. He was an extremely hard act to follow.

Bro Keddy was a regular visitor to Lodge Temperance and in 1997 he became a joining member in order to support the lodge which was experiencing difficulty. Shortly after joining he became Senior Warden and took the chair in 1999 after which he became D.C. of the Lodge.

In both lodges he has been a stalwart of the social committee and has put in many hours organising events for the benefit of the members and their wives.

Brother Keddy took pride in both his lodges and he made a particular point in welcoming visitors and making them feel at home.

Throughout his Masonic career Terry was a guiding light to many new masons giving them the benefit of his extensive Masonic experience and knowledge. He could always be relied upon to help out and both Terry and his wife Norma supported the Lodge over many years and regularly attended our social events.

He will be sorely missed by us all and our heartfelt sympathies are extended to his wife Norma and his family.

The Brethren of Lodge Temperance 2557 and others are requested to attend his funeral at the West Road Crematorium on Tuesday 25th November 2025 at 11.00 am and after at the Byker Freemason’s Centre, Corbridge Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE6 1HY. All are welcome.

Bro Andrew Christopher Messer was a founding member of Lodge Temperance 2557 which met at the Masonic Hall, Shakespeare Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was the Junior Deacon of Tyne Lodge 991 at the time and become the first Tyler of Lodge Temperance.

Andrew was only with Lodge Temperance 2557 for a year, resigning in November 1896 after his year as Tyler, but went on to be a founding member of Wallsend Lodge No. 2703.

On March 21st 1904 Andrew and his family embarked on the S.S. Pretorian at Liverpool destined for Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

He settled into life in Alberta, Nova Scotia and in 1908 became the organiser (founding member) and first Worshipful Master of Lethbridge Lodge 39 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Fortunately, they still meet in Lethbridge and have recently given permission to use a photo of Wbro Andrew.

In June 2024 a surprise email from a Canadian Freemason has led to the discovery of Bro Messer’s long-lost Lodge Temperance 2557 Founder’s Jewel.

The Jewel was returned to the UK by Canadian freemason RW Bro.Royston Colbourne, District Deputy Grand Master District 17 of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon.

You can see the photo and founders jewel and read more about Bro Messer on our website here:
