TW: This story contains mentions of su***de.
Earlier this month, a veteran who was locked in a self-destructive spiral was arrested, but sadly declined a police referral to Op NOVA. It’s a fairly common challenge with veterans who have lost hope.
A short while later, the veteran met his Department for Work and Pensions coach, who was so concerned for his wellbeing, they made a referral into Op NOVA.
Receiving the referral, NOVA's National Support Team (NST) reached out using the only contact method the veteran had consented to share - email.
- This email reached the veteran at a time he was planning to end his life.
- The email exchange, showing support and encouraging engagement with NOVA's NST, was his only human connection in that moment.
- The email exchange led to him being located and brought to safety by trained emergency services. He is now receiving much-needed support.
We are so thankful for every person who helps identify, engage, and support veterans in the justice system.
Awareness powers the UK-wide NOVA safety net, changing lives and, sometimes, saving them too.
If you are, or you know of, a veteran in the justice system, you can talk to NOVA in confidence and without judgment on 0800 917 7299.
