Is your cat drinking enough? 💧

Cats aren't always big drinkers, so there are a few simple things we can do to encourage them to take in more water.

Try putting several water bowls around the home, particularly in quiet places where your cat feels comfortable. Many cats prefer their water to be kept away from their food and litter tray, and some prefer a wide bowl that doesn't touch their whiskers.

Wet food can also help increase their water intake, and some cats enjoy drinking from a water fountain.

Keep bowls topped up with fresh water and wash them regularly, especially during warmer weather.

Small changes can make drinking more appealing and help keep your cat well hydrated.

Does it sometimes feel like your cat sleeps all day? 😴

Cats commonly spend around 12 to 16 hours a day asleep, and some may sleep even longer.

This goes back to their natural instincts. Cats conserve their energy between periods of activity, so plenty of rest is perfectly normal. Their sleep isn't always deep either. Much of it can be light dozing, allowing them to quickly wake up if something catches their attention.

Age can make a difference too, with kittens and older cats often needing even more sleep.

So if your cat has spent most of Sunday snoozing in their favourite spot, they may simply be taking Sunday very seriously.

MISSING CAT: SIMBA 🐾

Please keep an eye out for Simba, who has been missing from the NE30 area since 12 August.

Simba had only recently moved to NE30 from the NE61 area, so he may not know his new surroundings very well.

He is very friendly, but can be quite nervous when approached. He is also quite vocal and meows a lot.

Simba is neutered and microchipped. His chip details are up to date and he has been marked as lost.

Please keep a lookout in gardens, sheds, garages and other sheltered places where he may be hiding.

Meet Lottie 💜

Lottie is 12 years old and has come into our care very thin and suffering from flea dermatitis. At the moment, she is only eating a small selection of foods, including Applaws fish selection and Untamed fish, and she will take her medication with salmon Lick-e-Lix. (We have added some lily’s kitchen to list also as we thing she will like this)

She is such a gentle and affectionate girl and is trying her best. What she really needs now is regular meals to help her slowly gain weight and build her strength back up.

If you are able to send Lottie some of the food she will eat through our Amazon wish list, it would make a huge difference to her care.

Bringing a new cat home? Start small.

Giving them one quiet room to settle into can make their new surroundings feel much less overwhelming.

Include separate areas for food and water, a litter tray away from both, somewhere cosy to sleep, a hiding place, somewhere high to sit, a scratching post and a few toys.

Then give them time. There is no need to rush their first exploration of their new home.

Common cat behaviour, explained in one sentence 🐾

Scratching? It is a normal way for cats to stretch, maintain their claws and communicate through scent.

Hiding? Sometimes a cat simply wants somewhere quiet where they feel secure.

Slow blinking? Look at the whole cat and the situation, but a relaxed cat may slow blink at you.

Stalking and pouncing on toys? Your miniature hunter is doing exactly what comes naturally.

The more we understand cat behaviour, the easier it is to see the world from their point of view.

Happy World Photography Day 📷

Cats can be wonderfully photogenic. They can also turn their head, walk away or close their eyes at precisely the wrong moment.

Sometimes the best cat photos are the unplanned ones. A sleepy stretch, a curious look through the window, or that expression they make when they know perfectly well they are not supposed to be on the table.

Today seems like a good excuse to celebrate all those photos that capture a little bit of a cat’s personality.

🐾 MEET LULU – LOOKING FOR HER NEW HOME 🏡💜

Beautiful Lulu is a 3-year-old tabby and white girl looking for her new home through Cats Protection Northumbria Branch’s Direct Homing scheme.

This means Lulu will remain safely with her current owner until the right new home is found, rather than coming into Cats Protection care.

Lulu is a confident, independent little lady who enjoys pottering around the house, finding a comfy spot to snooze and keeping her humans company. She isn’t really a lap cat, but she does like to sit close by and be part of what’s going on. 💕

She’s also a proper little chatterbox! If Lulu can’t see you, she’ll happily shout for you, and she loves having a conversation when you answer her. 😹

Lulu enjoys her toys, particularly her fish and balls, and loves her cardboard scratchers.

🌳 Lulu enjoys outdoor life and is used to living in a rural area with access through a cat flap. Her new home will therefore need to offer safe outdoor access once she has settled in. She will need to remain indoors for at least 4 weeks after adoption before being introduced to her new outdoor surroundings.

🐶 No dogs for Lulu, please – she really isn’t a fan and will avoid or hide from them.

👧 Lulu can also be nervous around young, loud or boisterous children, so we feel she would be happiest in a quiet adult home or potentially with older, calm children who understand when she wants her own space.

🩺 Lulu has already been vet checked through Cats Protection and is:

🐾 Spayed
🐾 Microchipped
🐾 Vaccinated
🐾 Due her final vaccination in approximately 3 weeks, which will be covered by Cats Protection
🐾 4 weeks free pet plan

Lulu is sadly looking for a new home because her owner will be working abroad for the next year. This is through no fault of her own, and her current owner will continue caring for her until we find the right match. 💜

If you’re looking for a confident, chatty girl who enjoys both her independence and being close to her people, Lulu could be the one for you. 🐾🏡
