For today’s Fundraiser Friday, we’re saying a huge thank you and congratulations to James and Jordan who took on the challenge of running 400km around Mallorca in just four days. They did it in memory of their friend Lucy’s sister Hollie who sadly died in May last year following a cardiac arrest.

They raised £5,000 for Newcastle Hospitals Charity to say thank you for the care Hollie received on ward 21 at the Freeman Hospital. Lucy said: “The care my sister and our family received during that time was nothing short of extraordinary, which is why we chose to support Newcastle Hospitals Charity, with all proceeds going to Ward 21, where my sister was cared for.”

The money raised is going towards improving the ward, including upgrading the relatives' waiting room, and supporting staff wellbeing. Other important services for families in similar situations are also being supported through the funds raised.

This week we’ve been celebrating - and saying thank you to - our amazing volunteers for all that they do.

We have more than 200 volunteers working across The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working in a variety of roles to support patients, families, visitors and Newcastle Hospitals colleagues. In the last year they collectively contributed more than 40,000 hours, helping to create a more caring and supportive environment across our hospitals.

Our fantastic supporter Gary Dunning completed a 17-day trek to Everest Base Camp in April 2025 and has written a book about his experience, Everest Base Camp: Carry On Up The Khumbu 🏔️

After undergoing heart surgery, Gary chose to donate all royalties from the book to Ward 23, The Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital 💙

7-year-old Lucy and her mum Mary completed an amazing 8-mile sponsored walk, raising £500 for The Great North Children’s Hospital after the care Lucy received as a baby 💙

Lucy’s story is a powerful reminder of why fundraising matters.

"As Lucy is now older, we have told her about what happened to her as a baby, and how lucky and grateful we are to have here with us today. She wanted to help other children who may be in the same situation as her."

Driving over 1,300 miles (and back again!) for The Great North Children's Hospital 🚗

In September, Bill, Kim & Makayla Hedley will be taking part in Rat Run - setting off on an unforgettable journey from their home in Durham and driving all the way to Benidorm, Spain.

The family were inspired to raise money for The Great North Children's Hospital in memory of their granddaughter and daughter Millie Rose Hedley who sadly died in December 2025, aged just 9 years old from acute myeloid leukaemia.

Millie Rose was cared for on ward 12, the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at The Great North Children's Hospital and her family are incredibly grateful to the PICU team for the comfort they provided.

To make things a bit more fun and to get everyone involved, they will be turning the car itself into part of the fundraiser!
